This week, Hampton University will be holding a youth football camp, with convicted felon Michael Vick serving as the camp’s host.

At an April press conference announcing the camp, Vick talked about being seen as a role model for kids. Vick said: “Time spent with kids â€" just talking with an NFL player for 15 seconds â€" can spark a dream. That's the purpose of this camp.”

The camp is open to kids between the ages of 8-17.

Vick, who was convicted of federal dog fighting charges, has been trying to mend his public image since his release from prison.

In October 2009, Vick told the Los Angeles Times: “I just want people to really get to know me as an individual. What I want to do is change the perception of me. I am a human being. I've made some mistakes in the past, and I wish it had never happened. But it's not about how you fall, but about how you pick yourself up.”

What Vick calls “mistakes” were actually felonies which could have sent him to prison for much longer than the 18 months he spent incarcerated. The fact is, he spent years torturing and killing defenseless animals.

When police raided Vick’s house in Surry County in 2007, they found 65 dogs (nearly all pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, blood-stained carpets, and various equipment commonly used in dog fighting.

One of the items found on Vick’s property was a ‘rape stand’ which is a device in which female dogs are strapped into and restrained, to allow a male dog to breed with her.

According to the federal indictment, when dogs at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels lost a fight, or failed to perform well in ‘test matches,’ they were routinely killed by methods including electrocution, hanging, drowning, and in at least one case by “slamming” the dog’s body onto the concrete floor. In one session in April 2007, at least eight dogs were killed through these methods.

Vick took part in these executions along with his partners Purnell Peace, and Quanis Phillips. The indictment detailed a March 2003 incident, in which a female pit bull who had just lost a match was killed. Vick and Peace decided to kill her by “wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting her.”

Is this someone that Hampton University should be promoting as a role model to young boys?

Police in Va. rescue goat from woman's trunk

On Friday night, Bedford County sheriff's deputies conducting a sobriety checkpoint, heard loud knocking sounds coming from a woman’s trunk. When they opened it, the deputies found a goat, hogtied and struggling for his life.

The driver, Fiona Ann Enderby, 32, told deputies that she had purchased the goat for the four Kenyan immigrants in her car.

The goat was in obvious distress and given the hot temperature, surely would have expired soon, had the deputies not intervened.

According to Maj. Ricky Gardner of the Bedford sheriff's office, the temperature in the trunk registered at 94 degrees, ten minutes after it was opened.

The woman, who lives in Washington D.C., was charged with animal cruelty.

The goat is now at the Bedford County animal shelter and doing well.

Enderby’s first court appearance is set for next month.

Illegal alien charged with attempted murder in Williamsburg

On June 10, Williamsburg police arrested Raul Vasquez-Garcia, 33, in front of the same apartment complex where he allegedly shot a man, a week earlier.

On the night of June 4, police arrived at the Village of Woodshire apartments on Merrimac Trail, they found a man suffering from two gunshot wounds. According to police, the man and Vasquez-Garcia had been arguing over a woman.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he recovered from his wounds and has since been released.

Vasquez-Garcia is charged with attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and assault. He is being held without bond in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on Vasquez-Garcia.

On Monday, Virginia Police began making arrests related to a mob fight which resulted in a fatal shooting in the Green Run section of the city. On April 28, 2010, Eric Satterwhite, 19, was killed in the mini-riot that took place outside a convenience store on South Independence Blvd. just across the street from Green Run High School.

So far, police have taken 11 suspected gang members into custody, charging them with conspiracy, participation in a criminal act for the benefit of a gang, participating in gang activity in a school zone and three counts of assault by mob.

Two more suspects are still at large.

Those arrested are:

- Joseph Alan Burress, 19
- Sherrod Ivory Gaskins, 18
- Edgardo Inpong Satsatin Jr., 19
- Jameal Karmone Payne, 19
- Christopher Wayne Alexander, 19
- Maurice Anthony Robinson Jr., 18
- Todd Deyontea Pryor, 18
- Trayvian Jamal Lewis-Hewlett, 18
- Wayne Aundre Moore Jr., 19
- Kahaleel Yoni Ford, 18
- A 16-year-old male (name withheld by police because of minor status)

Police are still searching for Kevin D. Ford Jr., 22, and Dwan M. Peel, 21, both of Virginia Beach. Ford is wanted for Satterwhite’s murder.

The gang-related murder was only the latest in a string of such incidents in a city becoming plagued with gang violence.

In 2007, the Virginia Beach Police Department held a public forum to educate the community on the city’s problem.

During the meeting, Ken Dimitry, head of criminal intelligence for the VBPD, told the crowd that in 2003, only 20 crimes within the city could be attributed to gang activity, but by 2006, that number had grown to 282.

The following is a short list of recent gang activity in Virginia Beach:

-In 2005, a fight between the Bloods and Crips gangs resulted in a shooting.

-In 2006, two juvenile gang members were charged with robbery and gang recruitment.

-In August 2009, rival gangs got into a shootout at the Magic Moments Ballroom on Virginia Beach Blvd. The ballroom was hosting a back-to-school party.

-In April 2009, a large methamphetamine operation was busted in the Sandbridge section of the city. According to the FBI, the drug ring was connected to the notorious Mexican Mafia.

Gangs known to be active in the city are the Bloods, Crips, the Latin Kings, and MS-13.

However, the growth in gang violence is not only limited to Virginia Beach, but is becoming a tremendous problem for all of Hampton Roads.

In 2009, Alex J. Turner, special agent in charge of the Norfolk FBI office, told the Virginian-Pilot that there are 116 gangs throughout the seven cities of Southeastern Virginia, with 6,700 members.

After brief standoff, man arrested for beating a pregnant woman

On Thursday morning, Virginia Beach Police arrested Alphonso Gray, 24, after he allegedly broke into his pregnant girlfriend’s apartment and severely beat her in an early morning attack.

When police arrived at the home of Gray‘s friend, the suspect barricaded himself in the house. The standoff ended fairly quickly, with Gray surrendering to police without incident.

The pregnant victim, who police say was badly beaten, was able to identify Gray as her attacker. There was also a child in the apartment at the time of the assault.

Alphonso Gray was charged with attempted murder of a fetus, malicious assault, two counts of abduction, burglary with attempt to assault and trespassing.

Dog fighting operation busted in Hampton (w/video)

On Thursday, Hampton police arrested Robert L. Hynes, 38, and Kendal Lamonte Hargrove Jr., 18, and charged them with three felony counts each of animal fighting.

The arrests came after an undercover investigation conducted by animal control and special victims units officers. The Humane Society of the United States also assisted police in the investigation.

Police spokeswoman Paula Scheck said Hynes and Hargrove sold several pit bulls tot the undercover officers at a home on Marlborough court. The sales involved several thousands of dollars.

In addition to three dogs purchased, police took two other pit bulls from the home on Thursday. Sadly, one of the dogs has been used in the operation for more than ten years.

Cpl. Lynn Arway, animal control manager for the Hampton police department reports that both Hynes and Hargrove are connected to dog fighting ring which operates in multiple locations between Virginia and North Carolina.

If convicted, Hynes and Hargrove could each face up to five years in prison.
