Many of the stars head straight up to LIV Sun Life Stadium, the nightclub within the stadium located on the club level.

Many celebs have already watched the Dolphins during the preseason from the exclusive lounge including rapper Rick Ross and R&B sensation Cee-Lo Green.

Monday, the stars will keep shining at LIV Sun Life as Fergie of the Black Eye Peas will host and make an appearance. she is scheduled to sing the national anthem for the nationally televised game. Beyond Oblivion Unveils Boinc Music Service

Beyond Oblivion has finally released details of its device-based music subscription service. Called Boinc, the unlimited, ad-free music service will be bundled with mobile devices and PCs and can also be purchased separately. Visitors to the new Boinc web site — Boinc.com — can get details and a feel for how the service will be branded (cheerfully and playfully, not unlike how the look and feel of Spotify’s web site and marketing materials). as the web site explains, Boinc lets consumers “play, download and share as much music as you want for the lifetime of the Boinc’d device.” The company plans to license the service to mobile phone carriers, device manufacturers and car companies. no completed licensing deals have been announced to date. Boinc’s “feels free” approach stands apart from the fixed-price fees charged by most other music services. It’s the same approach Nokia tried – and failed – with comes With Music (later renamed Ovi Music Unlimited and then phased out in nearly all markets). but Boinc has the benefit of being available on more than one company’s devices – comes With Music was limited to Nokia devices – and the service will also be available as a paid service for iPhone and Android devices, according to reports. In my last column, we talked about why website load speed matters and how important it was for online retailers. Guess I touched a nerve. I got more emails and phone calls about that one than any other column I’ve written!

Load speed issues affect all websites, but we’re retailers, so today, I’ll cover some retailer specific issues that didn’t fit in last month’s column.

I reduced my homepage bounce rate to 15% last month using the following method.

Here’s how I worked on the load speed issues for my stores:

• Set a baseline for site’s current condition
• Determine acceptable load speeds for different types of pages
• Make sure hosting and files load fast
• Measure load speed monthly and track results

• Start with your homepage because most folks enter there
• Next, measure at your top 20 entry pages
• Then, look at your top 20 best-selling product pages
• Look to Google Webmaster tools to see your site’s averages
• Finally, compare your top pages with competitors

Google Webmaster Tools has a cool report that shows you your overall average load speed for all your pages and gives you a few specific examples.

Google says a page that loads in 1.5 seconds is fast.

E-commerce and usability expert Michael Summers says 3 seconds is fast.

Summers has watched over 1,000 real shoppers buy online from real stores in his usability / eyetracking labs. I put him on the spot, and he told me things start to get ugly after 3 seconds, so that’s my new baseline. I want my average e-commerce page to load in 3 seconds or less.

Last month, I got my own site down to an average load speed of 2.0 seconds, which is pretty damn fast for an e-commerce site. All sites are different. some industries need more icing on their cake than others.

Determine acceptable load speed ranges by page type:

• home page  – 4 seconds
• top 20 entry pages — 3 seconds
• category pages — 3 seconds
• product pages — 3 seconds
• content pages — 2 seconds
• detail pages — 5 seconds

Compare your stores to your strongest competitors to get a good idea of how fast your store needs to be to keep up with the Joneses.

Size matters, but load speed is determined by both sizes and number of files, and quality of Web hosting.

Last month, I did an experiment weighing 30 different Yahoo! Store developers’ homepages, and the slowest pages (5000KB) were the ones with dozens of images and javascripts and Flash.

However, rounding out the 10 slowest sites were some tiny web pages  (200KB) on really, really slow Web servers.

4.  Get the Fastest Web Hosting You Can

There’s a reason I use Yahoo! Store for my online store-building and hosting — so I don’t have to think about a lot of propellerhead stuff I don’t understand. I am a retailer, not a network administrator or server jockey.

For comparison, I also have sites on other hosting solutions — some blogs and a message board or two, and the load speed of hosting varies from vendor to vendor. Shared hosting (where your site is on a box with 100 other sites) can be painfully slow!

Do your homework on your hosting provider. Upgrade to the fastest hosting they offer.

CDNs or content delivery networks are services that host your files (images, video, etc) on multiple servers all around the world so the files are physically closer to the end-user.

For example, when a shopper in Mississippi looks at a product page on my store, the images load twice as fast as they would if they were hosted on the server that hosts my online store pages.

Yahoo! Stores have CDN baked in for product images and default icons. if you use custom image variables, your logos and badges and store elements load blazing fast!

For example, don’t have 800  product thumbnails on a section page. Ouch! Think 20 or maybe 50.

• Limit how many elements you put on a single page
• Break up pages into smaller blocks of pictures and text when it makes sense
• Re-use images and icons as much as you can
• Optimize individual files before you upload them

Set a maximum file size for an empty template for html, run of site scripts, browser chrome,  and other icons / elements / logos that exist on multiple pages of your site.

Take advantage of how browsers cache or reuse files already downloaded, so once a user “pays” for a logo or CSS file, re-use it on every page you can.

Optimize your HTML code with CSS at the top and javascripts at the bottom of the page.

Don’t use a lot of widgets or tools from third party websites. make sure your pages can fail gracefully when 3rd party services don’t load by putting that code at the bottom of your pages and outside of any design elements or store structure.

Determine acceptable file size ranges for images:

• number and size of images on a given page
• size of thumbnail images (dimensions in pixels and file size in KB)
• size of product images (dimensions in pixels and file size in KB)

Optimize your product images from the start:

• Make it a company policy to compress your images
• Optimize all your files as you upload them
• Make custom thumbnails for category pages
• Don’t rely on built-in image compression or resizing tools

Measure and evaluate load speed of top entry pages on a regular basis, as often as once a month. Pages change as people add code on top of code on top of code.

Google Webmaster Tools will show you how your site performs overall. Google only shows you a rolling 90 day graph, so I email myself this table and sample pages every time I’m in Webmaster Tools to archive it.

I use Tools.Pingdom.com to look at individual pages. It’s free! Saves history so you can see load speed over time and see load speed at different time of day

Look in your Analytics to see the impact load speed has on your bounce rates. I shoot for a bounce rate in the teens for my homepage and have been lucky this year.

Nowadays, most folks have broadband at up to 30-Mbps, but many will be browsing your store on a much slower connection. sometimes good bandwidth is clogged with too many users, like at a search conference hotel. Wireless connections are closer to dial up speeds than broadband. many rural customers settle for satellite or dial up connections.

Increasing the load speed of a page is the easiest way I’ve ever seen to increase conversions.

All things being equal, faster pages out-convert slower pages. if you have a slow-loading store, more folks will bounce or exit from your pages than if it loaded faster.

Make sure the most popular entry pages load lightning fast and move folks to interior pages. every feature needs to prove itself. any decrease in load speed must be offset by that feature’s boost in revenue.

Finally, be cutthroat about how skinny and fast your pages are. your business depends on it.

Web Host Online Tech Spends $1 Million in Flint, Michigan Data Center Upgrades

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Online Tech (onlinetech.com) announced on Tuesday that it has invested more than $1 million in upgrades and expansion to its Flint, Michigan data center.

According to the press release, the upgrades have been completed over the past nine months.

Earlier this month Online Tech upgraded its web-based client portal, OTPortal.

Online Tech says the data center was built in 1986 to function as a disaster recovery center for General Motors. Online Tech took over the facility in 2005 with its acquisition of Gentech, according to the press release.

With this investment, Online Tech focused on three core areas, including assurance of a high availability infrastructure, improving energy efficiency and an overall improved experience for its clients.

Online Tech upgraded its UPS infrastructure and added 100 KW of power to deliver 1 megawatt of power to the data center floor, according to the press release.

“all of our data center equipment, which we monitor and maintain on a consistent basis, is carefully audited to determine a timeline of use life,” Yan Ness, CEO of Online Tech said in a statement. “As the UPS infrastructure was reaching the end of its useful life, we wanted to replace it proactively to assure no incidents or risk to our client base.”

According to the press release, the UPS and Computer Room AC upgrades deliver higher energy effciency. the energy efficiency of the UPS system in particular increased from 80 percent to 92.5 percent with the installation of new MGE UPSs from Schneider Electric. Online Tech says the upgraded CRAC units are more energy efficient since they take advantage of free cooling.

Last week, CoreLink upgraded the UPS systems in its data centers with Schneider Electric.

Online Tech also added more work ares, conference rooms and a kitchen for clients to use.

“It can be hard working inside a data center with high noise levels and lack of work surfaces,” Mike Klein, president of Online Tech said in a statement. “we wanted to give our clients a place outside of the data center where they can take a break, have meetings or get some work done in a more relaxed environment.”

Online Tech has two data centers in Michigan, one in Flint and one in Ann Arbor.

Later this week the eyes of Texas might glaze over from hour after hour of University of Texas sports. the new Longhorn Network – LHN – debuts on cable television. It’ll be just in time for Friday’s women’s volleyball game against Pepperdine. Of course, the main event is football. It’s Texas, remember. And the home opener in that sport is September 3rd. the network will be all over it.

GOLDMAN: “Texas’ Greatest Games,” “Longhorn Legends,” “Texas Game Day.” Sensing a pattern here?

GREENE: I’m sensing a pattern.

GOLDMAN: There will be telecasts of 20 different sports, like that volleyball match you mentioned. but during the football season, Texas, a lot of football. so much that Texas coach Mack Brown has said publicly he’s a tad anxious about all the access the network’s asking for.

GREENE: Well, you know, we mentioned that TV and college sports have this long history. what exactly is the NCAA worried about with this?

GOLDMAN: Well, the Longhorn Network earlier this summer said it planned to carry high school games. Now, this scared other schools in the Big 12, Texas’s conference. They said Texas would have an unfair recruiting advantage. for instance, broadcasting a high school game gives that high school and coach great visibility. the coach may advise an athlete who’s trying to decide where to go to college to go to Texas because they treated us well.

Now, the NCAA responded to concerns by announcing this month that its bylaws say no broadcasting of high school games. There was a previously scheduled NCAA summit yesterday in Indianapolis to discuss the growth of college sports TV networks.

The high school youth sport issues dominated that discussion. And the NCAA says it was the start of a process that will lead to a final policy decision in about six to nine months.

GREENE: Talk about the evolution of college sports on TV. I mean, Notre Dame games showed up a lot of NBC Sports for a long time, but you’re saying this is taking it to a whole direction.

GOLDMAN: Well, yeah. before we talk about the new direction, where it’s come from is interesting. you know, the first televised college football game in 1939 had one camera, one announcer. Then you’ve got the biggest conference network deal so far – the PAC 12 conference contract with ESPN and Fox. And that’s worth about $3 billion over 12 years.

David, these whooper TV contracts obviously drive college football now. the quest to part of a huge deal was a big reason why there was all the musical chairs going on over the past year, with schools hopping to different conferences.

So, you ask, where’s it all headed. Probably more schools cutting individual deals like Texas, and some schools missing out on the big TV contracts.

I talked to Marc Ganis, a smart sports business guy in Chicago. He told me Congress might get involved, because the schools left behind have sympathetic lawmakers in D.C. And they’ll make a lot of noise about antitrust and the like.

GREENE: And, Tom, if ESPN is managing this network, I gather it will mean a lot of money for the school.

GOLDMAN: Yeah, about $11 million a year.

GREENE: is there any connection, Tom, briefly, between all of these issues and the unfolding scandal at the University of Miami, which has certainly gotten the NCAA’s attention, where a booster allegedly gave athletes money, jewelry, even access to prostitutes?

GOLDMAN: Well, yeah, I thin there is. In going forward in the future with these big deals and all the money, there will be pressure to attract star high school athletes even more, as colleges try to be one of the economic haves. that potentially could lead to more inducements, more NCAA rules violations.

GREENE: Tom, thanks.

Patriot Day – Remembering September 11, 2001

Now and then an event is so powerful that every detail becomes permanently etched into the minds of the people who experienced it, and every generation to come will be told the story. One such moment began on the quiet morning of September 11, 2001.

People across the United States woke up that morning and heard the terrifying news about commercial airliners being hijacked. Four planes were taken over by Al-Qaeda terrorists: American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77 and United Airlines Flight 93. Although no one knew the hijackers’ demands, it wouldn’t be long until the devastating truth behind their mission was revealed.

At 8:48am, American Airlines Flight 11 was flown directly into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Less than twenty minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 struck the south tower. the ferocity of the impacts produced tremendous explosions and weakened the buildings so thoroughly that they both collapsed less than two hours after being hit.

A final plane remained under the terrorist’s control – United Airlines Flight 93. no one was sure what their target was, but there was much speculation that the plane was either being taken towards the White House or Camp David. the passengers of this flight heard about the fate of the other planes, and all of the innocent people who were killed in that morning’s tragedies. they decided to take a stand.

Some of the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 called loved ones and told them that their plane had been hijacked. they said tearful goodbyes and told family members that they loved them. when the time came, the brave victims fought back. they attacked the terrorists who held them captive, and struggled for control of the plane.

Flight 93 crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. there were no survivors, but the bold actions of the passengers helped prevent further destruction and loss of life. they will forever be mourned and honored as heroes.

Immediately, people who were near the attack sites sprang into action. Firefighters rushed into buildings to put out the flames and bring people safely outside. Rescue workers sorted through debris for days in the hopes of finding survivors. People all over the nation stood in line for hours to donate blood for the victims who were injured that morning. In the wake of the worst attack on American soil, the country banded together to help each other and grieve over our losses.

On December 18th, 2001, an amendment was made to the United States Code to memorialize September 11 as Patriot Day. the proclamation called for all local governments to recognize the day, flags to be flown at half-staff and the people of America to observe a moment of silence for the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that morning.

September 11th is a day that will never be forgotten. we will remember it for the tragedies we witnessed, the devastating loss of innocent lives and the way it united an entire country. People everywhere felt a renewed sense of pride and patriotism for their homeland, and they were reminded about the importance of friends and family who so deeply enrich our lives.

Web Host Hosting Ireland Launches Reseller Hosting Packages

Hosting Ireland has two levels of reseller hosting packages

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Hosting Ireland (hostingireland.ie) announced on Monday that it has launched reseller hosting.

This news comes two months after Hosting Ireland partnered with SpamExperts to offer its customers email security products.

Hosting Ireland says it launched reseller hosting based on the growing demand from small businesses looking to offer hosting and domain registration services.

Hosting Ireland’s reseller package offers a “considerable margin opportunity” from hosting, according to the press release. Resellers can also profit from .ie domain name registration, international domain name registration, SSL certificates, advanced spam filtering, mail backup and anti-virus protection.

“Hosting Ireland is committed to helping businesses get online and many SME’s would rather deal through their preferred local IT provider or web developer,” Jonathan Bate, managing director of Hosting Ireland said in a statement. “SME’s generally like buying from local businesses and these businesses can now offer hosting products and services.”

The web host has two different reseller packages. The basic plan, reseller lite, is ideal for individuals or businesses who want to start offering hosting for the first time. this package includes 100 domains, 40GB disk space, 400GB monthly transfer, control panel, account creation API, dedicated IP addresses, free setup and telephone support and a 10 percent discount on other products including domain names.

The reseller professional package includes the same features at the lite package, but instead hosts 500 domain, 60GB disk space, 600GB monthly transfer and a 15 percent discount on other products.

Both packages are hosted on Irish servers, according to the website.

The web hosting landscape in Ireland has made headlines this month as European data center provider TelecityGroup acquired Irish web host Data Electronics at the beginning of August.

Last week Amazon Web Services provided details of its Dublin data center outage.
