Lawrence Taylor on prostitutes: “I don't ask for a birth certificate.”

On Tuesday, Williamsburg native and former NFL star Lawrence Taylor, 51, was sentenced to six years probation after pleading guilty in January to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute, both misdemeanors. While Taylor will not do any jail time, he will have to register as a sex offender.

In June 2010, Taylor was indicted by a grand jury just outside New York City on charges of rape, criminal sexual act, endangering the welfare of a child, patronizing a prostitute, and sexual abuse.

If he had been convicted of those charges, Taylor could have spent the rest of his life in prison.

Shortly after receiving his sentence, Taylor gave a rather colorful interview with Fox News’ Shephard Smith in which he defended his actions and commented on the “world of prostitution,” saying:

“I'm not the cause of prostitution. And sometimes I make mistakes and I may go out there. And I didn't go pick her up on no playground. She wasn't hiding behind the school bus or getting off a school bus. This is a working girl that came to my room.”

He continued: “It's the world of prostitution. You never know what you're gonna get. Is it gonna be a pretty girl, an ugly girl or whatever it's gonna be.”

And, as to the whether or not she is a minor?

Taylor replied: “You can only ask. I don't card them. I don't ask for a birth certificate.”

Taylor went on to admit how he has frequently used the service of prostitutes over the last several years.

“I'm not looking for a relationship. Hey, sometimes I look for some company,” Taylor explained. “It's all clean. I don't have to worry about your feelings. It's all clean. I'm not saying it's right. It's the oldest profession in the world.”

The former New York Giant concluded: “I guess you call it a crime. It's one of those crimes you don't think about. You never think you're gonna get busted because everyone does it until you get busted, and then it's more embarrassing than anything else.”

The Hall of Fame linebacker is no stranger to the law. In the 1990s, Taylor was jailed twice for purchasing drugs from undercover police officers, and in 2009, he was arrested in Miami for leaving the scene of an accident.

Over a dozen Hampton Roads children died from abuse in 2010

On Thursday, the Hampton Roads Regional Child Fatality Review Team released a grim report detailing the deaths of 16 children from Hampton Roads who died from abuse last year. A total of 44 children died from abuse across Virginia in 2010.

Among those deaths, half were the result of neglect, while most of the others were the result of head trauma.

The following crimes are but a few of the worst which occurred against children in Hampton Roads in 2010:

-In July, Newport News police arrested Darius Brown, 22, and charged him with the murder of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old son. He was watching the little boy while his mother was at work.

According to the arrest warrant, Brown called 911 and when officers arrived at the Aqua Vista Apartments, they found the child ”lying face up on the bed, unresponsive, cold to the touch and had no pulse.”

Brown told police that the child became “unsteady on his feet, falling asleep and not being able to stay awake.”

Police said there were obvious injuries on the boy’s tiny body. The cause of death was listed as head trauma and blunt force abdominal trauma.

According to an affidavit, he had “several overlapping, human bite marks on his upper torso to include the stomach, chest and diaphragm area, as well as his legs and back.”

The toddler also had wounds which appeared to have been sustained from a “clamping device with teeth.”

While court documents indicated Brown refused to answer the officer’s question, as to when he last saw the child, the following disturbing events were recorded in the report: [Brown] “had taken videos of the child…showing how the child had been acting and was insistent that Officer T.E. Byers review them. Officer T.E. Byers observed the videos depicting the child, J.G. 01-29-2009 unsteady on his feet and falling to the ground. Officer T.E. Byers continued watching the videos and the condition of child, J.G. 01-29-2009 to worsen with each video.”

The video was taken on Brown’s cell phone.

The boy’s 5-year-old sister was also home at the time, and told police she saw “Darius punch, kick and bite Jireh.” The girl was unhurt.

-In May, Newport News police arrested Julia Leanna Tomlin, 25, and Justin Samuel Jones, 28, and charged them with felony child neglect, after having found their 1-year-old with untreated burns on her back, shoulders and arms.

According to police, the little girl was actually placed on the stove, and fell on one of the burners. The girl’s injuries went untreated for a week.

All five of the couple’s children were remanded to the custody of Child Protective Services.

-In April, Heaven Smith was sentenced to 17 years in prison for starving her 10-month-old twin daughters, one of whom died as a result of the severe neglect.

Smith was sentenced after pleading guilty in March 2010 to murder and child neglect. Her husband, Corey Bryant, a Norfolk-based sailor, was already serving a 15-year sentence for his role in the crime.

In April 2008, Miracle Grace, starved to death. Her sister, Heaven Lee Anna, survived the ordeal, requiring months of hospitalization.

Rather than hire a baby sitter, Smith and her husband restrained the two little girls in infant seats and left them alone while they went to work. When paramedics saw the girls, they found both in respiratory distress, and their tiny bodies covered from head-to-toe in bloody rashes.

According to court documents, the children suffered from malnutrition and dehydration for months.

-In January, Jathiya Wooden, 28, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the starvation/dehydration death of her 4-year-old daughter, Tamera.

Around 4:00 p.m., on Aug. 30, 2008, Wooden decided to punish her daughter for wetting the bed by placing her in a corner of the apartment she shared with her live-in boyfriend. She stacked furniture around the child so that she could not leave.

Already terribly underweight and suffering from dehydration, little Tamera was unable to even sit down in her makeshift jail cell.

Around 2:00 a.m. (10 hours later), Tamera began beating on the wall and screaming for her mother to let her out. Wooden responded to her daughter’s cries by beating her for several minutes with an umbrella.

It was not until 2:00 p.m. the following day, a full 22 hours after pinning her daughter in a corner that Wooden discovered Tamera was dead. Apparently, her boyfriend, Troy Edwards, sat for hours playing video games, while the girl‘s lifeless body lie only feet away.

Rather than reporting the girl’s death, Wooden and Edwards shoved her body into a closet. Wooden then called the police and claimed that her daughter ran away from a nearby playground and was now missing.

Of course, it did not take long for the pair’s story to unravel.

Wooden told police that around 9:00 a.m., she screamed at her daughter to wake up. However, she did not investigate when the girl failed to respond.

According to court documents, Wooden said: “I thought she was just playing, like she was just mad or something, she was just trying to be smart, probably one of her games she was playing.”

Wooden continued: “If I knew I was hitting her somewhere that could have killed her I would have never done it, but it was in the middle of the night, and it was dark, and I didn't know.”

The girl’s autopsy results showed that she died from malnutrition and dehydration, her little body simply shut down after being forced to stand for hours. She was also covered in bruises, with many of the wounds perfectly matching the tip of Wooden’s umbrella.

The 4-year-old weighed only 26 pounds.

Wooden had been convicted of child abuse in the past, and though she has six children, only Tamera and her infant daughter were living with her at the time. Two of the children lived with their father.

Another child was taken from Wooden and lives with her mother.

Prior to the child’s death, Tamera’s paternal grandmother filed a complaint with local child protective services against Wooden. However, no investigation was ever conducted.

Her boyfriend, Edwards, also pleaded guilty to murder and child-neglect charges.

The Hall of Fame linebacker is no stranger to the law. In the 1990s, Taylor was jailed twice for purchasing drugs from undercover police officers, and in 2009, he was arrested in Miami for leaving the scene of an accident.

This is a test

This is the 2nd test.

This is the text below the image.

Hispanic Republicans Back Voter ID

The Hispanic Republican Conference has thrown its weight behind the controversial voter ID legislation slated to hit the House floor next week. In a statement released today, the caucus said the issue is essential to integrity at the ballot box and that its overwhelming support by the public indicates change is necessary.

The legislation would require voters to present a form of approved identification, like a state-issued driver’s license or concealed handgun license, in order to cast a ballot.

"To ensure the integrity of our election process, I am supporting the Voter ID bill along with other bills to ensure that candidates reside in their districts, to strengthen our voter registration system, [and] to protect military voter access to Texas elections,” state Rep. John V. Garza, R-San Antonio, said in a statement. Garza and Reps. Aaron Peña, R-Edinburg; Raul Torres, R-Corpus Christi; Dee Margo, R-El Paso; Jose Aliseda, R-Beeville; and Larry Gonzales, R-Round Rock, are the conference’s charter members. The conference is also open to non-Hispanic members whose districts have Hispanic populations of 30 percent or more.

The announcement comes just a week after the original members, minus Gonzales, issued a fiery statement calling on Washington to overhaul the country’s immigration policies, alleging the current system promotes discrimination and produces “a class of vulnerable persons.”

Members also said last week they would not support state legislation some Republican members have proposed that would strip children of undocumented immigrants of certain entitlements.

The voter ID bill, an amended version of SB 14 by state Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, is sponsored in the House by state Rep. Patricia Harless, R-Spring. It is scheduled for floor action on Monday.

Justice Department forces local police departments to lower test standards

The Dayton Police Department has been forced by the U.S. Justice Department to lower their written testing standards because they say that too few African-Americans passed the exam.

Under previous requirements, candidates had to score 66 percent on one half of the test and 72 percent on the other half.

The new standards only require police candidates to achieve scores of 58 and a 63 respectively…Basically, an ‘F’ and a ‘D’ in any U.S. public school.

The lowered standards meant that 258 people who failed the test, have now passed. Dayton officials have refused to comment on how many of those candidates were actually minorities.

Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane told ABC 22:  “It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community. It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation."

Beane does not disagree that Dayton needs more black officers, but he says there are better ways to achieving that goal.

Beanne said: “We need to work with the youth and make them interested in becoming law enforcement officers and firefighters. Break down the barriers whether they are real or perceived, so we can move forward in this community.”

The FOP president has who some might see as an unlikely ally on this issue as well.

Dayton NAACP President Derrick Forward said: “The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed. If you lower the score for any group of people, you're not getting the best qualified people for the job.”

Of course, the DOJ has been imposing this policy on departments throughout the nation for the last few years.

In February 2006, the Justice Department warned that the math portion of the exam given to Virginia Beach, Va. police applicants discriminated against minorities. They arrived at this conclusion because black and Latino candidates were reportedly failing the math portion of the test at a much higher rate than their white counterparts.

In 2004, the DOJ opened an investigation into the hiring practices of the Virginia Beach Police Department because while blacks accounted for about 20 percent of the city's population, they only made up 10 percent of the city's police force.

From 2002-2005, 59 percent of black police applicants and 66 percent of Latino applicants passed the math portion of the test, while during that same period 85 percent of white applicants passed the math test. In light of these results, the Justice Department alleged discrimination.

However, the math test was hardly sophisticated or complicated by reasonable standards. These exams only test for very basic math skills.

A sample math question on the Virginia Beach Police exam, printed in the Virginian-Pilot, read: “On Tuesday, Officer Jones worked the 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift. At 10:55 p.m. he was called to the scene of an accident where he remained until 1:30 a.m. How long past his regular shift did Officer Jones work?"

Amid the allegations of discrimination, the now-retired VB Police Chief A.M. Jacocks Jr. said: "We are not looking for rocket scientists. This is a basic math aptitude test."

Eventually, the city of Virginia Beach gave into pressure from the Justice Department and dropped their mandatory minimum score on the math portion of the exam.

While successful applicants were still required to score at least 70 percent on the reading and grammar portions of the test, they were no longer required to score a 70 on the math portion. In the past, an   overall score of at least 70 percent was required to pass, it was then lowered to an overall score of 60 percent.

The agreement with the Justice Department also allowed 124 minority applicants to re-enter the hiring process. The city then paid $1,300 to each of the black and Latino applicants who failed the test between 2002 to2005.

One lone member of the Virginia Beach city council spoke out in against the new policy.

Shortly after the announcement of the newly lowered testing standards was made, Councilwoman Reba McClanan (who happens to be African-American) voiced her opposition. She said: "One of the things that's insulting about it is they're telling us we don't have a right to insist on certain standards.”

Obama refuses to call attack on U.S. servicemen “terrorism”

While German authorities have declared Wednesday’s attack on a group of U.S. airmen outside the airport in Frankfurt as a clear act of terrorism, the Obama administration is not yet ready to characterize it as such.

Witnesses reported hearing the gunman shout “Allah Akbar” before opening fire on an Air Force bus in front of the airport.

The man German police say is responsible for the shooting is Arid Uka, 21, a Muslim who apparently worked at the airport. He has reportedly confessed to the shooting which left two airmen dead and two others wounded.

One of those killed in the attack was Old Dominion University student, Airman 1st Class Zachary R. Cuddeback of Stanardsville, Va. He was attached to the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

The Air Force has identified the other fatality as Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden of Williamston, S.C.

German prosecutor, Rainer Griesbaum told reporters that Uka from Kosovo said carried out the shooting “as revenge for the American mission in Afghanistan.”

All of the airmen on the bus were headed to Afghanistan.

The only reason there were not more casualties was because Uka’s pistol jammed, as he pointed it at the head of another airman. He then dropped the pistol and ran inside the airport where he was quickly taken into custody.

While President Obama has said he was "saddened and outraged" by the shooting, he has failed to mention that the attack was carried out by a man who appears to be a radical Muslim.

Of course, it was months before the administration would admit that the Fort Hood shooting was indeed an act of “terrorism.” That attack, allegedly carried out by Major Nidal Hassan left 13 people dead and another 32 wounded, witnesses also reported hearing the gunmen scream "Allah Akbar" before opening fire.

Two guilty pleas in separate child pornography cases

On Wednesday, James Eddy, 34, pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of possession of child pornography.

Eddy was arrested in January, after being caught filming women at a Chesapeake tanning salon. When officers searched his home, they discovered multiple images of child pornography on his computer.

According to Eddy the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia, Eddy faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on June 9.

Also on Wednesday, former Navy corpsman, Jakob Benjamin Lee, 25, pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of distribution of child pornography.

Somali pirates sentenced to life plus 80 years

On Monday, five Somali pirates were sentenced to life in prison, plus 80 years each in Norfolk’s U.S. District Court.

Last November, Mohammed Hasan, Gabul Ali, Abdi Dire, Abdi Gurewardher and Abdi Umar were convicted of federal piracy charges after firing on the USS Nicholas on April 1, 2010.

The Nicholas was on patrol off the coast of Somalia at the time of the attack.

The piracy conviction was the first of its kind in almost 200 years.

Last week, a federal grand jury indicted 13 Somali nationals and one Yemeni on piracy charges for the February hijacking of a yacht with four Americans on board.

The yacht's owners, Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, CA, and passengers Bob Riggle and Phyllis Macay of Seattle, were all shot to death.

The four had been distributing Bibles in Africa.

Prostitution: Has Backpage.com picked up where Craigslist left off?

After years of criticism from both law enforcement and human rights groups, Craigslist.com finally removed their “erotic services” section, which was nothing more than a front for online prostitution.

Of course, nature abhors a vacuum, so where Craigslist left offâ€"another website offering adult companionship has taken its place. The website is known as Backpage.com and their ads would make a Teamster blush.

A recent look at Backpage.com’s local edition features ads with scantily clad women in very suggestive poses, who sell “massages.”

The following two ads are typical of what can be found on the website:

-“All American girl that loves to play â€" 23

Hi guys, my name is Angelia…I am the all American girl next door with a twist…I am very open minded and love to cater to the upscale gentleman!!!

Available for outcalls in Norfolk also available for 2 girls and couples!”

-“Massage by Dominique â€" 25

We offer low price massages that will totally relax you. Are you looking to relax and unwind then you really need to contact me for all your massage needs.

Massage rates $65.00 and hour.”

This reporter contacted “Dominique” to inquire into just exactly what a customer could expect for his $65.00. I was somewhat surprised that this young lady was so willing to discuss her ‘services’ with someone over the phone, though she did ask me if I was a cop.

She told me that “mutual massages” were available for $120.00 an hour and that all of her services are performed with both she and the customer fully naked, and that the customer would be fully “released” at the end of the hour.

She also told me that her sister could join us for an extra $35.00.

Many of the ads actually offer military discounts.

On Saturday night, Newport News police conducted an undercover sting, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals on various prostitution-related charges.

According to NNPD, officers with their Organized Crime Division used Backpage.com to contact suspected prostitutes and "johns," and arranged meetings at an apartment complex in the city.

Among the arrests were a 17-year old girl and three soldiers from Fort Eustis.

Those arrested along with the charges they face, follow:

-Samuel Akinsanya, 25, Brooklyn, New York - Aiding and Abetting Prostitution, Use of a Vehicle to Promote Prostitution, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

Virginia has become stronghold for MS-13 (w/video)

MS-13 (or Mara Salvatrucha) was formed by Salvadoran, mostly illegal immigrants in the 1980’s, during El Salvador’s civil war. While the gang was originally made up exclusively of Salvadorans, they now accept all Central Americans as well as Mexicans. MS stands for Mara (slang for mob), Salva (El Salvador), Trucha (slang for on-guard).

MS-13 began in Los Angeles and as members moved deeper into the country, more loosely structured gangs or cliques were formed. However, these cliques continued to communicate with one another, and the network was formed.

Over the years, MS-13 has become better structured, and the FBI believes that the gang’s L.A. members have a higher status among the group. The gang typically targets high school and even middle school students for recruitment.

Initiation into the gang usually consists of the recruit committing a brutal attack on either a rival gang member or even upon an unsuspecting civilian. On November 26, 2008, Jonathan Retana was convicted of the murder of Miguel Angel Deras, which was part of an MS-13 initiation.

MS-13 has aligned itself with the Mexican Mafia, which has a large presence not only on U.S. streets, but is widely viewed as the most powerful prison gang. The smaller MS-13 pays the Mexican Mafia for protection, while their members are incarcerated.

According to the FBI, there are at least 70,000 MS-13 gang members operating between Central America and the United States. The FBI also reports that the gang currently operates in 42 states as well as the District of Columbia. The highest concentrations are in California, the District of Columbia, New York, and Virginia.

MS-13 set up shop in Northern Virginia during the 1990s, lured by the region's fast-growing Salvadoran population, later expanding into the Maryland suburbs of Langley Park and Gaithersburg.

The following violent acts were committed by MS-13 gang members in Virginia and the D.C. Metro area:

-In February 2011, Alexander Rivas, 18, was arrested by Alexandria police, following an investigation that began in November, when the father of a 14-year-old runaway told police his daughter was living with Rivas. Court documents state that the girl was found in the gang member’s apartment and she was being used as a prostitute.

According to prosecutors, Rivas ran a prostitution ring, operating in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, using underage runaways. The affidavit states that the business catered to “construction workers and illegal immigrants.”

On a typical Friday or Saturday night, the operation would see about 100 customers paying for sex.

Rivas typically charged $50 for sexual intercourse with the girls.

Rivas is charged with sex trafficking of children by force, fraud or coercion.

A17-year-old girl told detectives that Rivas carried a machete, he nicknamed “his wife,” when taking her to have sex with his clients. He reportedly used the machete to intimidate anyone who tried to avoid paying.

Rivas admitted to once robbing a group of men of $1,200, and telling them: “What are you going to say? That you got robbed after having sex with a minor?”

-In December 2010, Loudoun County Circuit Court Judge Thomas D. Horne sentenced Hector Valdami Campos-Aguilar, 19, to 10 years in prison for a September 2008 drive-by shooting that took place in Sterling Park. The gang-related attack wounded three people, leaving one paralyzed.

According to prosecutors, Campos-Aguilar along with two other MS-13 members drove up on a group of young men at the intersection of East Poplar Drive and Buckingham Court in Sterling, thinking they were members of the rival 18th Street gang, they turned around and opened fire on the group.

One of the victims was shot in the arm; another was shot in the back, penetrating his spleen; and another was left paralyzed from the waist down from his injuries.

As it turned out, none of the shooting victims were actually gang members.

Campos-Aguilar, came to this country illegally from El Salvador, and has a long criminal record. His record in Fairfax County alone includes convictions for receiving stolen goods, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, trespassing and assault and battery.

-November 2011, a jury found gang member Ingmar Guandique, 29, guilty of first-degree murder in killing of D.C. intern Chandra Levy. Guandique, who speaks no English, heard the verdict through a pair of headphones on which the translation was provided.

A Salvadoran national in this country illegally, Guandique was charged in April 2009 with the murder of the missing intern, who disappeared in 2001. Her skeletal remains were discovered a year later in D.C.’s Rock Creek Park.

According to prosecutors, Guandique murdered Levy on May 1, 2001, raping her along a jogging trail in the park.

At the time of his arrest for the Levy murder, he was already in prison for assaulting two other women in the same park at knifepoint. He is serving a 10-year sentence for that crime.

In October 2009, Assistant U.S. Attorney Fernando Campoamor told a judge in D.C Superior Court that Guandique, along with members of the MS-13 gang threatened to kill a witness and his family, if he testifies at Guandique’s trial.

-In 2007, MS-13 gang member Everec Alvarez Chacon pled guilty to beating a man to death in a Suitland, MD cemetery. Two other gang members took part in the 2004 murder.

-In 2005, two MS-13 members were convicted in an Alexandria, Va. United States District Court for killing a 17-year-old pregnant girl. A rope was placed around the neck of Brenda Paz, she was then stabbed repeatedly. Her body was then left along the muddy banks of Virginia’s Shenandoah River. The murder was retribution for the girl’s cooperation with a federal investigation into the gang’s activities.

-During 2004-2005, there were two machete attacks in the Northern Virginia area. An Alexandria teenager lost four fingers during a savage encounter with MS-13 members, while a Fairfax man also became a victim of an MS-13 machete attack. Both incidents are believed to have been initiation acts.

In 2005, Michelle Malkin writing for Human Events said: "Reporting by a reliable Norfolk [VA} source indicates MS-13 members are planning to randomly attack local law enforcement officers in the Tidewater area. Threats of this nature have been termed by gang members as 'green light' notices. Green light notices have continued to increase, prompting the Virginia Gang Association to issue warnings to law enforcement in Virginia and the surrounding states. . . . Additional source information indicates local MS-13 members are equipped with weapons and ballistic vests."

The violence which MS-13 perpetrates is unprecedented in this country, and they do not limit their brutality to rival gang members. Whether a civilian or even a police officer, no one is safe as long as this gang exists.

Vick co-defendant charged with violating probation

Quanis L. Phillips has been ordered to appear in federal court in Richmond on March 15. His probation officer reported that “Phillips’ adjustment to supervision has been unsatisfactory. He continued: “Phillips has failed to appreciate the seriousness of his situation and has not taken responsibility for his actions.”

Since his release from federal prison in February 2009, Phillips has been shot twice, once last summer outside Michael Vick’s birthday party at Guadalajara Restaurant in Virginia Beach. He also was shot in another incident a month earlier.

According to the probation officer’s report, Phillips failed to report an arrest on reckless driving on a suspended license in November 2010 and having contact with Chesapeake police in April 2009.

Phillips, along with Vick took part not only in the dog fights at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels but routinely killed dogs by methods including electrocution, hanging, drowning, and in at least one case by “slamming” the dog’s body onto the concrete floor. In one session in April 2007, at least eight dogs were killed through these methods.

Phillips took a plea deal, and agreed to testify against Vick, in exchange for a shorter sentence.

Arts organization honoring convicted felon Michael Vick

The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association (SEVAA) will present convicted felon, Michael Vick with an award at their Black-Tie Honors Gala next month in Norfolk.

According to reporter Cindy Clayton, the Norfolk-based group sent out a press release announcing the award, which states Vick has “epitomized the meaning of ‘hero’ not only by his unparalleled accomplishments on the football field, but more importantly, by his relentless resilience in overcoming the obstacles he has faced in his career, defying the odds and naysayers, and becoming a true example of life success for all to emulate.”

The group’s official website (SEVAA.org) provides the following information: “SEVAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts and culture of African-Americans in the Hampton Roads, Virginia region. The organization focuses on five disciplines: visual arts, dance, music, literary arts and theater. SEVAA sponsors activities that promote and assist artists and cultural organizations; encourages increased participation in the arts by African-American artists and arts organizations; serves as a channel of communication for its membership, and works to generate increased support for the arts.”

This reporter tried to reach SEVAA for comment, but their phone number has been disconnected.

In September 2007, a Surry County grand jury affirmed two state charges against Vick…one count of unlawfully torturing and killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Each felony charge could have resulted in a five-year prison term.

Vick eventually pleaded guilty to one count under a plea deal and not guilty to the other, and that charge was dropped. Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell approved the plea agreement and sentenced Vick to a three-year suspended jail term and probation.

Vick actually went to prison after pleading guilty to a federal conspiracy charge of bankrolling the dog fighting operation. He served 18 months of a 23-month sentence at Leavenworth federal prison.

When police raided Vick’s house in Surry County in 2007, they found 65 dogs (nearly all pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, blood-stained carpets, and various equipment commonly used in dog fighting.

One of the items found on Vick’s property was a ‘rape stand’ which is a device in which female dogs are strapped into and restrained, to allow a male dog to breed with her.

According to the federal indictment, when dogs at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels lost a fight, or failed to perform well in ‘test matches,’ they were routinely killed by methods including electrocution, hanging, drowning, and in at least one case by “slamming” the dog’s body onto the concrete floor. In one session in April 2007, at least eight dogs were killed through these methods.

Vick took part in these executions along with his partners Purnell Peace, and Quanis Phillips. The indictment detailed a March 2003 incident, in which a female pit bull who had just lost a match was killed. Vick and Peace decided to kill her by “wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting her.”
