Petersburg man who set boss on fire gets 8 years behind bars

On Friday, Henry Morton, 52, was sentenced to 40 years in prison with Circuit Judge James F. D'Alton Jr. suspending all but 8 of those years. Morton had already pleaded guilty to two counts of malicious wounding.

On the morning of November 17, 2009, Cristy Wright, 35, arrived at the Petersburg East Complex at 110 Croatan Drive, where she worked as the manager. As soon as she exited her   vehicle, Morton ran up to her, threw a cup of gasoline in her face and set her ablaze.

As the flames enveloped her upper body, Morton beat her with a metal pipe before fleeing the scene.

Several parents and children at a nearby school bus stop heard Wrights screams and came to help.

Prosecutor Ken Blaylock described the scene, saying: “People just rushed right up to her, running with coats and everything trying to put her out. She was lucky that there were a lot of people around.”

Witnesses told police they saw Morton board a Petersburg Area Transit bus, and a special alert was issued to all city bus drivers.

Within minutes, a bus driver reported a passenger who fitted Morton's description and police quickly arrested him.

Morton told the arresting officers that he “just snapped.”

The day before the attack, Morton had been fired from his job as a maintenance worker at the Petersburg East Complex.

Morton’s lawyer, Petersburg public defender John Cobb, said: “He felt that she was somewhat responsible for losing his job. He kind of felt like she didn't like him from the very beginning, and that it was her mission to get him fired.”

His victim, recovered from the blow to her head, but she suffered permanent burn to her forehead from the flames.

Weapons stolen from Chesapeake police officer’s car

On Tuesday night, someone broke into a vehicle parked in front of the home of a Chesapeake police officer and stole a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and ammunition from the trunk. The officer lives off of South Lynnhaven Road in Virginia Beach.

Body of Hampton native, Bush official, found in Delaware landfill

On Friday, the body of a former Bush administration official who also led the effort to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C., was found in a landfill in Wilmington, Delaware. Police have ruled the death of John P. Wheeler III, 66, to be a homicide.

Newark Police spokesman Lt. Mark Farrall said that Wheeler had not been reported missing before they received a call that a body had been dumped from a garbage truck at the landfill.

Police believe Wheeler's body was dumped into a garbage bin in Newark sometime before the truck arrived to empty it.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Wheeler was last seen traveling on an Amtrak train   from Washington to Wilmington, last Tuesday.

Wheeler was a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and served in the Reagan administration as well as both Bush administrations.

During the Reagan years, Wheeler served as chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. He went on to found the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program, which helps veterans find jobs. He also helped to create the Earth Conservation Corps during the George H.W. Bush administration. From 2005-2009, Wheeler served as a special assistant to George W. Bush.

Wheeler, a Hampton High School alumnus, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1966, and had degrees from both Yale and Harvard.

The Newark Police Department is asking that anyone with information into Wheeler’s murder contact them at 1-800-TIP-3333.

Michael Vick was never actually punished for his brutal crimes

In September 2007, a Surry County grand jury affirmed two state charges against Vick…one count of unlawfully torturing and killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Each felony charge could have resulted in a five-year prison term.

Vick eventually pleaded guilty to one count under a plea deal and not guilty to the other, and that charge was dropped. Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell approved the plea agreement and sentenced Vick to a three-year suspended jail term and probation.

Vick actually went to prison after pleading guilty to a federal conspiracy charge of bankrolling the dog fighting operation. He served 18 months of a 23-month sentence at Leavenworth federal prison.

So, despite the claims by Vick’s supporters that “he has paid for his crimes,” he actually has not.

The truth is that Michael Vick has never spent a day in prison for animal cruelty. He merely went to prison for financial crimes.

When police raided Vick’s house in Surry County in 2007, they found 65 dogs (nearly all pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, blood-stained carpets, and various equipment commonly used in dog fighting.

One of the items found on Vick’s property was a ‘rape stand’ which is a device in which female dogs are strapped into and restrained, to allow a male dog to breed with her.

According to the federal indictment, when dogs at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels lost a fight, or failed to perform well in ‘test matches,’ they were routinely killed by methods including electrocution, hanging, drowning, and in at least one case by “slamming” the dog’s body onto the concrete floor. In one session in April 2007, at least eight dogs were killed through these methods.

Vick took part in these executions along with his partners Purnell Peace, and Quanis Phillips. The indictment detailed a March 2003 incident, in which a female pit bull who had just lost a match was killed. Vick and Peace decided to kill her by “wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting her.”

The reason Vick may be so despised by so many, is that he was never punished, nor will he ever be for brutalizing and killing so many helpless victims.

Williamsburg native Lawrence Taylor pleads guilty to sex crimes

On Thursday, former NFL star Lawrence Taylor, 51, pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute, both misdemeanors. While Taylor will not receive any jail time, he will have to register as a sex offender. He will also serve six years on probation.

In June 2010, Taylor was indicted by a grand jury just outside New York City on charges of rape, criminal sexual act, endangering the welfare of a child, patronizing a prostitute, and sexual abuse.

If he had been convicted of those charges, Taylor could have spent the rest of his life in prison.

The plea deal which keeps Taylor out of prison was accepted largely because of his assistance with human trafficking investigations since his arrest. Prosecutor, Arthur Ferraro, told reporters outside the courtroom on Thursday that Taylor "was of assistance in the field of human trafficking in several jurisdictions and with federal authorities."

On May 6, Taylor was arrested at a Montebello, NY, Holiday Inn, accused of paying a 16-year-old prostitute $300 for sex.

According to Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe, the Bronx runaway told detectives that she had been threatened and physically assaulted. She was allegedly brought to Taylor’s hotel room by a pimp.

Taylor, who initially denied the allegations, grew up in Williamsburg, Va., and played in the NFL from1981-1993, spending his entire pro career with the New York Giants.

The Hall of Fame linebacker is no stranger to the law. In the 1990s, Taylor was jailed twice for purchasing drugs from undercover police officers. Last year, he was arrested in Miami for leaving the scene of an accident.
