Elderly man assaulted leaving hospital

On Tuesday, Gloucester County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the home of a 64-year-old man, who had been brutally assaulted and robbed after leaving the hospital. His alleged attacker was actually the same young man who volunteered to drive him home.

Deputies arrested Shawn Eric Blankenship, 21, of New Point Comfort Highway, and charged him with unlawful wounding, grand larceny, and destruction of property.

The victim said Blankenship took him back to his apartment, and then assaulted him, stealing his wallet and his truck.

According to the police report, the man suffered very significant injuries and was transported by helicopter to Riverside Regional Hospital.

Blankenship is being held without bond at the Gloucester County Jail.
