Anniversary of Norfolk police officer’s murder

Around 2:00 a.m., on January 16, 2003, Norfolk Police Officer Sheila Herring, 39, arrived at a bar on East Brambleton Avenue, in response to a shooting call.

When she and her fellow officers exited their vehicles, they encountered several men standing outside the bar. One of those men quickly drew a handgun and began firing. Officer Herring was struck three times.

The other officers returned fire and fatally wounded the gunman, Mario Roberto Keen, a Jamaican national in the country illegally. In 1990, he was sentenced to five years in prison for distribution of cocaine, and was later deported.

Officer Herring was hit in the abdomen, just below her vest. She was taken to Norfolk General Hospital, where she died less than an hour later in surgery.

Officer Herring had only been with the Norfolk Police Department for 11 months when she was killed. Prior to joining the department, she was a Detroit police officer for 10 years. She also served for three years with the Norfolk Airport Police Department.

Officer Sheila Herring left behind an 18-year-old daughter.
