Portland, OR - On July 1, Adam Brown, 49, was waiting inside the restroom at the Wendy's restaurant on Northeast Sandy Boulevard when a 10-year-old boy walked in and was quickly attacked.
According to police, Brown grabbed the boy and immediately locked the door, ordering the child to strip naked while he held a knife to his throat.
Though the boy suffered knife wounds to his neck, hands and legs, he fought off his attacker and eventually broke the knife in half.
The victim's father heard the commotion and instructed the manager to unlock the bathroom door.
With the help of other customers, the boy was pulled out and Brown was confined to the restroom until police arrived.
Sue Roberts was in the restaurant at the time and told KPTV: "I came in and just heard a little boy screaming, then his dad came in and said call 911, so we got our cell phones and called 911."
Brown claimed to have a gun and a standoff ensued. While inside the bathroom, he reportedly started two small fires.
However, the only weapon recovered was the knife allegedly used on the boy.
The 10-year-old victim required emergency surgery, but has since been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
Brown has been charged with attempted murder, assault in the first degree, sex abuse in the first degree, kidnap in the first degree, arson, furnishing false information to a police officer and coercion.
Brown is a convicted child molester and HIV positive.
The Associated Press has reported that Brown recently spent eight years in an Oregon prison on sodomy charges.
