Alleged serial rapist pleads guilty to assaulting elderly Virginia Beach woman

On Tuesday, Kindale Keith Moore, 22, pleaded guilty to charges of forcible sodomy and burglary with the intent to rape.

According to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, the attack occurred on the night of February 14, 2010.

Sometime before midnight, Moore slipped into the 88-year-old woman’s home and waited.  When she headed down the hallway to her bedroom, Moore grabbed her by the shoulders, forced her down and sexually assaulted her.

Moore was previously convicted of another sexual assault in Portsmouth and sentenced to 60 years for that crime. That victim testified during his trial that Moore told her he liked to “fondle older women.”

Moore will be sentenced for the Virginia Beach rape on May 24, 2011.

While Moore is believed by many to be responsible for a series of rapes on elderly women throughout Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, most of the victims could not identify their attacker, as he always wore a hood.

DNA was only recovered in one of the cases.

Moore was also charged in another rape in Virginia Beach, but prosecutors were forced to drop the charges when the 89-year-old victim died before the trial began.

Arts organization honoring convicted felon Michael Vick

The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association (SEVAA) will present convicted felon, Michael Vick with an award at their Black-Tie Honors Gala next month in Norfolk.

According to reporter Cindy Clayton, the Norfolk-based group sent out a press release announcing the award, which states Vick has “epitomized the meaning of ‘hero’ not only by his unparalleled accomplishments on the football field, but more importantly, by his relentless resilience in overcoming the obstacles he has faced in his career, defying the odds and naysayers, and becoming a true example of life success for all to emulate.”

The group’s official website (SEVAA.org) provides the following information: “SEVAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts and culture of African-Americans in the Hampton Roads, Virginia region. The organization focuses on five disciplines: visual arts, dance, music, literary arts and theater. SEVAA sponsors activities that promote and assist artists and cultural organizations; encourages increased participation in the arts by African-American artists and arts organizations; serves as a channel of communication for its membership, and works to generate increased support for the arts.”

This reporter tried to reach SEVAA for comment, but their phone number has been disconnected.

In September 2007, a Surry County grand jury affirmed two state charges against Vick…one count of unlawfully torturing and killing dogs and one of promoting dogfights. Each felony charge could have resulted in a five-year prison term.

Vick eventually pleaded guilty to one count under a plea deal and not guilty to the other, and that charge was dropped. Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell approved the plea agreement and sentenced Vick to a three-year suspended jail term and probation.

Vick actually went to prison after pleading guilty to a federal conspiracy charge of bankrolling the dog fighting operation. He served 18 months of a 23-month sentence at Leavenworth federal prison.

When police raided Vick’s house in Surry County in 2007, they found 65 dogs (nearly all pit bulls), a dog-fighting pit, blood-stained carpets, and various equipment commonly used in dog fighting.

One of the items found on Vick’s property was a ‘rape stand’ which is a device in which female dogs are strapped into and restrained, to allow a male dog to breed with her.

According to the federal indictment, when dogs at Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels lost a fight, or failed to perform well in ‘test matches,’ they were routinely killed by methods including electrocution, hanging, drowning, and in at least one case by “slamming” the dog’s body onto the concrete floor. In one session in April 2007, at least eight dogs were killed through these methods.

Vick took part in these executions along with his partners Purnell Peace, and Quanis Phillips. The indictment detailed a March 2003 incident, in which a female pit bull who had just lost a match was killed. Vick and Peace decided to kill her by “wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting her.”

Chipotle restaurants in Virginia under suspicion for hiring illegal aliens

On Monday, the Chipotle restaurant chain confirmed to the Washington Examiner that they have received “notices of inspection” from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, in regards to 60 Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants throughout Virginia and Washington D.C.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told the newspaper: “The unfortunate part of the system is that it puts companies in a very difficult position. On one hand, we must comply with ICE requirements to verify the status of every employee we hire, but we must do that without discriminating and violating the mandate of the Department of Justice."

Arnold continued: “As for why ICE is picking on Chipotle, that is a better question to ask ICE.”

In December 2010, Chipotle fired hundreds of workers from several locations in Minnesota, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement began an investigation into the immigration status of the restaurant chain’s workforce.

Illegal alien workers were fired at locations in downtown Minneapolis (Skyway and Seven Corners), Golden Valley, Coon Rapids, Richfield, Stillwater and Hudson, Wis.

Chipotle has over 1,000 locations across the country and recorded a net income of $126 million in 2009.

MS-13 gang member charged with child sex trafficking in Virginia

Last week, Alexander Rivas, 18, was arrested by Alexandria police, following an investigation that began in November, when the father of a 14-year-old runaway told police his daughter was living with Rivas. Court documents state that the girl was found in the gang member’s apartment and she was being used as a prostitute.

According to prosecutors, Rivas ran a prostitution ring, operating in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, using underage runaways. The affidavit states that the business catered to “construction workers and illegal immigrants.”

On a typical Friday or Saturday night, the operation would see about 100 customers paying for sex.

Rivas typically charged $50 for sexual intercourse with the girls.

Rivas is charged with sex trafficking of children by force, fraud or coercion.

A17-year-old girl told detectives that Rivas carried a machete, he nicknamed “his wife,” when taking her to have sex with his clients. He reportedly used the machete to intimidate anyone who tried to avoid paying.

Rivas admitted to once robbing a group of men of $1,200, and telling them: “What are you going to say? That you got robbed after having sex with a minor?”

Rivas remains in custody at this time.

Cases such as this one are becoming more commonplace due to a largely unprotected border, the lack of immigration enforcement and the consequential spread of gang crime.

The following is a list of other similar cases:

- On June 2010, Donald Castilblanco-Hernandez, 27, pleaded guilty in a federal court to transporting a woman across state lines for prostitution. The Nicaraguan national admitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office that in January, he traveled to Georgia to pick up a woman and returned her to Alabama to work for him as a prostitute.

According to court documents, ICE agents entered the illegal alien’s Northport residence on Jan. 15 and found the woman and a man who told the agents he paid money to have sex with her. Castilblanco-Hernandez was arrested as he approached the house.

In August, Castilblanco-Hernandez was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Abdul K. Kallonto ten months in prison.

-In March 2010, Mario Alberto Laguna-Guerrero, 25, was arrested by deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, on sexual battery charges, after he allegedly forced one mentally disabled girl into prostitution and raped another.

According to the affidavit, the Mexican national told investigators that he had been “dating” the 17-year-old girl, who has an IQ of 58, and asked her to become a prostitute for him. He also admitted that he took the girl to so-called migrant labor camps where she performed sex acts with men for a fee of $25.

The girl told ICE agents that she would be with up to nine “johns” a night.

Laguna-Guerrero told detectives that he asked the 17-year-old to recruit her classmates into prostitution as well.

The girl said she tried to recruit a mentally disabled 16-year-old on her school bus. According to her mother, the 16-year-old has the mental capacity of a second-grader.

When the young woman refused to become a prostitute, an angry Laguna-Guerrero allegedly raped her in front of the other girl.

The U.S. Attorney's Office charged the illegal alien with sex trafficking of a minor, if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Laguna-Guerrero has been in the country illegally since 2002.

-In January 2010, three illegal aliens were arrested in Philadelphia and charged with running two brothels in a South Philadelphia neighborhood.

According to the federal indictment, Jose Claudio Corona Cotonieto, 27, Raymond Gonzalez Salazar, 31, and Nicolas Gonzalez Salazar, 22, were trafficking Hispanic women from New York, New Jersey and Delaware to work in the brothel for a week at a time.

Investigators say the Mexican nationals had been running the brothels since August 2009, making about $9,000 per week.

In a press release, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement issued the following statement on the case: “As part of the ongoing criminal investigation and in addition to the criminal arrests, ICE special agents identified and administratively arrested 50 individuals believed to be in the U.S. illegally. Those arrested include 39 males from Mexico, nine males from Honduras, and two females from Mexico. Those administratively arrested will be placed into removal proceedings and their cases will be adjudicated in immigration court.”

A neighbor living near one of the brothels told Fox News Channel 29: "Two brothels â€" two of them? And they're getting $9,000 in one week. OK."

Grateful for the arrests, she continued: "I think that's great because that would bring a lot of crime and, to me, it isn't safe at all.”

-In July 2009, illegal alien and convicted felon Emma Tlacoxolal-Perez was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 33 months in prison for running brothels in eastern Virginia, in Chesapeake, Newport News, James City County and Williamsburg.

The Mexican national was the head of a prostitution ring which employed women smuggled into this country from Mexico, and only catered to other illegal aliens.

Tlaccoxablal-Perez, along with co-conspirator Felipe Vargas-Ortega, passed out business cards to advertise for the brothel known as El Nopal (The Prickly Pear).

Two more alleged co-conspirators, Francisco Sanchez-Martinez and Juan Carlos Vargas-Ortega, were also prosecuted.

Tlacoxolal-Perez, 37, who has operated brothels in Virginia since 2004, was actually deported in 2006, but easily found her way back across the largely unprotected border.

Customers paid $30 for 15 minutes with one of the prostitutes, the ring leaders kept half of it.

The Newport News location was in a suburban neighborhood and Mexican men typically went through the neighborhood at all hours, often knocking on neighbors’ doors looking for the brothel.

Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney Howard J. Zlotnick told the court: “The poor people living on Eastwood Drive,” had to live with "strange men knocking on their doors looking for girls."

All of those involved were illegal aliens from Mexico, El Salvador, and Ecuador.

-In February 2009, local police and federal agents raided a brothel run by Mexican nationals in Glen Burnie, MD

-In September 2008, police in Baltimore, MD shut down a Mexican brothel and arrested Carlos Silot, who ran the operation, along with two prostitutes, all were illegal aliens. Court documents show that at this particular brothel, the women would work for seven days and then sent back to North Carolina, and exchanged for new prostitutes.

-In June 2007, police in San Antonio arrested a mother and her two daughters for smuggling two minors out of Mexico to use them as prostitutes. Once in the U.S., the girls ages 15 and 17, were told they would have to work as prostitutes for five years to pay off their smuggling fees of $3,000. They were threatened at gunpoint and told that if they did run away, that their families back in Mexico would be killed.

Isabel Ochoa, 60, received time served. Consuelo Ochoa, 34, was sentenced to 18 months for sex-trafficking and an additional 39 months for a separate drug case. Maria Ochoa, 32, was sentenced to 12 months and one day.

-In March 2007, police in Madison, TN raided a Mexican brothel in a residential area and arrested Mexican nationals Santos Perez and Jose Garcia who ran the operation, along with two Mexican prostitutes.

Again, the brothel charged $30 per customer. The women were forced to have sex with dozens of men every day.

A Madison Police detective told News Channel 5: "It's pretty terrible. I don't think these girls want to be there. These girls don't want to be forced to do 30 customers a day.”

At the time of the raid, police told reporters that they were investigating at least 10 Mexican brothels in the Nashville area.

-In January 2006, police in Charlotte, NC raided two brothels run by Mexican nationals, both were crowded with women smuggled into this country and held against their will.

The Charlotte Observer reported that the leaders of these prostitution rings bring Mexican and Central American women in and out of Charlotte, exchanging them for women in Raleigh and Greensboro. One of these women could typically be sold between the pimps for $130 each.

This country is currently experiencing an epidemic of sex trafficking, with children all too often being used as the commodity.

Most of these women and young girls are confined in locked rooms with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and frequently beaten. Of course, even if they are able to escape, they are afraid to, as they are often told that if they leave, their families will be harmed.

Walmart fires employees who took down armed robber

On January 13, loss prevention officers in a Salt Lake City area Wal-Mart spotted a man stuffing a laptop computer into his jacket, when the shop lifter headed toward the front door, the workers stopped him and brought him into an office in the back of the store.

Once inside the office, the man, Trent Lofton, removed the laptop from his jacket, along with a handgun and rushed Gabe Stewart, one of the security officers.

Stewart was pushed up against a wall, while fellow employees Justin Richins and Shawn Ray were backed against a closed door.

Asset protection supervisor Lori Poulsen, then pulled the gun out of Lofton’s hand and her co-workers jumped on the man, restraining him until police arrived.

According to police in Layton, Utah, Lofton is a convicted felon with a long criminal past, and had several outstanding warrants at the time of the incident.

On Monday, Longton pleaded guilty to robbery, and the purchase, transfer, possession or use of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. He is scheduled for sentencing on March 28.

Sounds like a bad situation with the best possible outcome, right?

It would be if the Wal-Mart employees who stopped this dangerous criminal had not been fired.

A week later, all four workers were in fact fired because they disarmed and detained the suspect.

Wal-Mart policy states employees are able to use reasonable force when a suspect thief is physically struggling with them, but if a gun is drawn they must withdraw immediately.

However, it is difficult to see how the employees who were being held at gunpoint in a small room could have “withdrawn.” It would seem that the workers were simply fighting for their own lives and in doing so, potentially saved other employees and customers alike from grave harm.

Under growing criticism, Wal-Mart issued the following statement: “We appreciate the intentions demonstrated by our associates in this situation, but the actions taken put their safety, and potentially the safety of our customers and other associates in jeopardy.”

This is not the first time Wal-Mart has fired an employee for apprehending a dangerous criminal.

In October 2009, Josh Rutner was performing his duties as an asset protection officer in an Ocala, FL Wal-Mart, when he observed a man stuffing merchandise into his pants. Rutner followed the suspect, Marc Ash, outside where he and another employee tackled the alleged shoplifter.

Just as had happened many times before, the shoplifter went down, and the merchandise in this case, a $42 box of golf balls, was recovered. However, unlike before, this suspect came back up wielding a knife.

Ash tried to slash Rutner in the face, and took off running across the parking lot. Rutner gave chase.

Rutner told the Star Banner: “I felt now that he was a danger to the public and the city. If he'd pull a knife on two security guards, he'd pull a knife on anyone.”

A customer witnessed the scene as it unfolded and assisted Rutner in the chase. Ash dropped the knife and was arrested and charged with robbery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault.

The next day, Wal-Mart fired Rutner for his actions.

Rutner reported: “They said this is a non-rehirable offense. At the age of 65, I can't even come back and become a greeter.”

Rutner admitted he understood Wal-Mart’s policy against chasing after armed suspects, but says the risk to customers and the public compelled him to act.
