Woman charged with mutilating pigs in Chesapeake

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old Portsmouth woman was arrested in a horrific animal mutilation case which shocked those living in the Hickory section of Chesapeake.

According to police, Ashley Marie Fowler went to a home on Ballahack Road sometime late Monday night, and beheaded a piglet and stabbed another one so severely it had to be euthanized.

The homeowner, Janie Sawyer, found the piglet’s head on her front porch as she was leaving for work Tuesday morning. The piglets were being raised by her son.

Sawyer reported to police that she has never heard of the accused.

Fowler was charged with two counts of felony killing/maiming livestock, vandalism and felony drug possession. She also allegedly slashed the tires on the family’s pickup.

Fowler could face up to 10 years in prison on each felony count.

This was the second case of an animal beheading in Chesapeake in about a year.

On January 29, 2010, a Nigerian dwarf goat named Andy was taken from his home on West Saint Brides Road. A few days later, someone placed his head in the yard.

No arrest was ever made in that case.
