Newport News man pleads guilty to molesting 4-year-old boy

On Tuesday, Brandy Shane Mack, 35, pleaded guilty in York-Poquoson Circuit Court to sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy.

Mack was arrested on July 30 and charged with aggravated sexual battery of a child less than 13-years-old and taking indecent liberties with a child. As part of a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to the aggravated sexual battery charge.

According to Assistant Commonwealth's attorney Barbara Cooke, Mack was babysitting the victim on Jan. 16, 2010, when he had the boy perform sex acts on him.

The boy’s parents discovered the abuse had taken place after taking him for therapy, when began exhibiting “troubling behavior.”

Mack, who has been held without bond since his arrest at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail will be sentenced on April 5. He is facing up to 20 years in prison.

A few facts about child molestation:

-According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 20 percent of all U.S. girls and 10 percent of all U.S. boys suffer some form of sexual assault, before reaching adulthood. Child molestation is a national epidemic.

-The California Department of Corrections reports that over half of convicted sex-offenders return to prison, within a year of their release. That number jumps to three-fourths, after a year. In fact, 20 percent of all U.S. prison inmates report to having molested a child.

-There are currently more than 400,000 registered sex-offenders in the United States.

-The National Institutes of Health reports, the average child molester sexually abuses 117 children over his lifetime.

-According to the FBI, less than 10 percent of molestations are ever reported.
