Two Norfolk police officers charged with manslaughter

On Wednesday, a grand jury indicted two Norfolk police officers on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. The charges stem from an early morning crash in July that resulted in the death of Donnell Worsley who was riding his bicycle on Brambleton Avenue.

The officers were allegedly speeding.

The officers charged are Derek Folston, 34, and Joey Bennett, 25, both work in the first patrol division and have been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of their trial.

Around 1:30 a.m., on July 25, Worsley was riding his bicycle in the 1600 block of Brambleton Ave. when he was hit by a police vehicle. Worsley was taken to the hospital and remained in serious condition until September 24, when he died.

According to his obituary, Worsley had a degree in massage therapy and was employed at Atlantic Dominion.

Folston has been a Norfolk police officer since September 2007, and Bennett joined the force in June 2008.
