The World’s Second Largest Data Center Becomes Proving Ground for Energy Efficiencies

ATLANTA, GA, Nov 16, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –Key Highlights:

— World’s second largest data center earns LEED Gold Certification. — After hosting an Environmental Defense Fund fellow, QTS will make a $10 million multi-year investment in energy efficiency measures portfolio-wide. — by consistently reducing power usage and driving down PUE, QTS is able to pass significant cost-savings through to customers while being a good environmental steward.

QTS (Quality Technology Services), one of the nation’s largest andfastest-growing providers of data center facilities and managedservices, today announced a series of energy efficiency investmentsand successes, including achieving Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for its Atlanta Metrofacility — the world’s second largest data center.

Developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is aninternationally-recognized green building certification system. QTS’innovative features and commitment to reducing energy costs wererated highly by LEED professionals.

“We understand the difficulty in achieving LEED in a multi-tenantdata center where individual tenant agreements require specifictemperature and humidity guidelines,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, chief operating officer, and founding chair — US Green BuildingCouncil. “The engineering and data center operation teams at QTS’Atlanta Metro Data Center are to be commended for achieving LEEDGold, which certifies this building to be among the world’s greenesthigh-performance buildings.”

Since purchasing and upgrading the 990,000 square-foot Atlanta MetroData Center in 2007, QTS has implemented several green processes, such as devoting 4.5 acres of roof space for rain water capture tosupport the cooling infrastructure. Further, since January 2010, QTShas improved the power usage effectiveness (PUE) at Atlanta Metro by11.4 percent, resulting in significant power cost savings that thecompany is able to pass through to its customers.

this past summer, the company engaged the Environmental DefenseFund’s (EDF) Climate Corps Program, a summer fellowship program thatplaces specially-trained MBA and MPA students in organizations tohelp drive energy efficiency, to further reduce QTS’ carbonfootprint. EDF Climate Corps fellow, Sukrit Sehgal (William and MaryCollege of Business, MBA ’12) worked with the company’s data centeroperations and engineering teams to identify more than $4 million inpotential annual energy efficiency cost savings at Atlanta Metro. Asa result, the company plans to make a $10 million multi-yearinvestment to implement Sehgal’s recommendations across the company’sportfolio. QTS and Sehgal’s work a re featured in an EDF-producedvideo released this week that can be seen here.

“Achieving LEED Gold in a large, multi-tenant environment isextremely challenging, and everybody at QTS is justifiably proud ofthis achievement. we also appreciate the contribution our designbuild team of JE Dunn Construction, AECOM, and Gibbens Drake Scott,Inc. in obtaining this certification,” said Brian Johnston, chieftechnology officer — QTS. “As we implement our EDF fellow’srecommendations through a $10 million multi-year investment, westrive to be not only good stewards of resources, but pass costsavings through to our custo mers who have an interest in going green.our entire company continues to focus on a team approach to obtaingreater efficiencies, and we expect these improvements to continue.”
