Rice has shoulder surgery

Rice has shoulder surgery

Star swimmer Stephanie Rice has undergone shoulder surgery just three months before the London Olympics trials.

The triple Olympic gold medallist was rushed to hospital on Tuesday to have an immediate arthroscopy on her right shoulder to repair a torn tendon.

She withdrew from the Queensland championships this due to soreness in her right shoulder, the same joint that forced her out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year.

Rice announced she had the keyhole surgery on Twitter and posted a photo of herself immediately after.

‘I have just undergone an arthroscopy on my right shoulder which had a small tear in the tendon,’ Rice tweeted.

‘Everything else was a-ok and should be back in the water before Christmas.’

While Rice is confident of a swift return to the pool, the setback is not ideal ahead of the Olympic trials in Adelaide starting on March 15.

Meanwhile, world champion James Magnussen has blitzed the 100m freestyle field on night three of the Queensland State Championships in Brisbane, claiming the two-lap dash in 48.63 seconds.

In his first major 100m freestyle final since winning two gold and a silver at this year’s Shanghai World Championships in July, the 20-year-old Sydney sprinter comfortably accounted for fellow world championship relay gold medallist Matt Targett (49.15) and promising Gold Coast 17-year-old Cameron McEvoy (49.19).

‘I was pretty happy with that swim, though I can’t really say the same for my coach, he wasn’t too pleased,’ said Magnussen.

‘But that’s what this meet was about, finding little things that I needed to work on ahead of next year’s trials in Adelaide.’

Cate Campbell was equally impressive in the women’s event, holding off a fast-finishing Melanie Schlanger (53.85) to claim the race in a time of 53.82.

‘I have put on 10 kilo’s since this year’s trials and am starting to reap the rewards of a better diet,’ said Campbell.

‘That was my best swim in a textile suit, so I am not only happy but very surprised, especially to do it at a state meet.’
