On July 28, George Cole, 76, a greeter at the Walmart in the Tanglewood Shopping Center, took a bathroom break around 9:30 p.m. That’s when he was brutally assaulted and robbed.

According to police, Charles Everett Williams, 19, was waiting in that bathroom for a victim.

In addition to the beating, Williams also allegedly stole the $23 in Cole’s wallet, leaving him on the floor, where he remained for some time.

Williams was taken to Albemarle Hospital where he was treated for several injuries, including a concussion.

Williams, who was arrested in the parking lot, is charged with robbery, assault inflicting serious injury, possession of stolen goods and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently being held in the Albemarle District Jail on $75,000 bond.

Elizabeth City Police Lt. John Etheridge said: “Mr. Cole was found in the bathroom at Walmart bleeding. He had been punched in his face twice, both eyes. And his mouth was also bleeding. He was there for quite a while.”

Etheridge went on to describe what led them to Williams’ capture, saying: “[A] citizen reported they knew who it was, got in touch with him and he came back to the scene. He came back to the scene and that's how we made the arrest."

Cole, now recovering from his injuries at a co-worker’s house, described the ordeal, saying: "I remember going to the restroom on my break, that was around 9:30 at night. And from then on I don't know...I woke up in the ambulance. They were helping me in the ambulance.”
