Two HRT employees charged with stealing $80,000 in bus fares

On Wednesday, Latasha Boyd, 22, of Virginia Beach and Karen Watkins, 23, of Portsmouth turned themselves into police after both were indicted by a grand jury for stealing $80,000 from Hampton Roads Transit bus fare boxes.

Both women began working for HRT in 2008, and have been charged with embezzlement, money laundering, and tax evasion.

According to Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant, Boyd and Watkins started stealing the fares in early 2009.

Bryant told WTKR: "Their official title at the time was vault pullers and their duties were to go down to a location in Virginia Beach and get the money that came off of the buses, the cash money, and to take that back to Norfolk to be counted."

None of the $80,000 has been recovered.

Boyd is free on a $50,000 bond, while Watkins is still being held in the Virginia Beach Jail. If convicted, both defendants face up to 70 years in prison.
