Woman found with goat tied-up in trunk of her Mercedes...guilty of animal cruelty

Bedford County General District Court Judge Harold Black has found a woman guilty of animal cruelty, after she was arrested in June with a goat in her hot trunk.

The woman, Fiona Enderby, 32, of Washington, D.C., was stopped at a sobriety checkpoint by Bedford County sheriff's deputies, who heard loud knocking sounds coming from the trunk of the woman’s Mercedes. When it was opened, the deputies found a goat, hogtied and struggling for his life.

Enderby told deputies that she had purchased the goat for the four Kenyan immigrants in her car.

The goat was in obvious distress, foaming at the mouth and given the hot temperature, surely would have expired soon, had the deputies not intervened.

According to Maj. Ricky Gardner of the Bedford sheriff's office, the temperature in the trunk registered at 94 degrees, ten minutes after it was opened.

Judge Black sentenced Enderby to 10 days in jail and a $500 fine, but suspended all of the jail time and $400 of the fine.

The goat is now living at the Peaks of Otter Winery/Johnson's Orchards in Bedford County.

Owner, Danny Johnson told WSET 13: “I would say he's having an excellent life. He eats well. He has everything he could ask for. We named him ‘Trunk,’ because we thought that was very appropriate since he came out of the trunk of a car. We just call him ‘Trunk.’”

Johnson continued: “He's having a wonderful time, and I expect some time in February he's going to be a daddy.”
