Newport News police ask for help finding murder suspect

Newport News police have named a suspect in Sunday’s shooting death of a man outside of a so-called “nip joint,” which is a private residence that illegaly sells alcohol.

Tawan Tyrone Thomas, 27, is wanted for murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is accused of killing Timothy Terelle Brand, 33, in the 600 block of 45th Street, after an argument.

Thomas’ last known address is in the 4200 block of Orcutt Avenue. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
