The man shot several times in a Caroline County, Va. truck stop, while foiling a robbery attempt last weekend, has left the hospital. The 61-year-old good Samaritan, who police have not identified hit the robber in the back of the head with a beer bottle, after the assailant began shooting at the clerk’s feet.

The Caroline County Sheriff's Office said around 9:30 p.m., Saturday, the robber walked into a Mr. Fuel convenience store pointed a gun at the clerk’s face and demanded money from her. According to general manager Gary Poland, at the time of the attempted robbery, there were several customers and four employees were in the store.

When the woman had trouble opening the register, the armed attacker fired two rounds at her feet.

The surveillance video shows a customer walking up behind the robber and smashing a beer bottle over his head. There was a brief struggle, during which the customer was shot four times. Fortunately, none of the wounds were serious and the sheriff’s office announced today, that the man is now back home.

The store clerk told reporters: “If it wasn't for [the good Samaritan], I'd be dead. That guy would've shot me; he'd already shot next to my feet twice.”

Apparently, as humble as he is courageous, Caroline County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Moser, told the press that the man “doesn't want to be [called] a hero.”

The robber is still at large. He is described as a black male, 30 to 40 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing 220 to 240 pounds. During the melee, he dropped a pair of prescription eyeglasses and may have a large cut on his head from the beer bottle.

Anyone with information about this crime should call the Caroline Sheriff's Office at (804) 633-5400 or their anonymous tip line at (804) 633-1133.
