On May 24, 1972, Norfolk Police Officer Lewis Hurst was serving a search warrant at a home suspected of narcotics activity. The warrant was originally issued by the Chesapeake Police Department, and the operation was a joint effort between the two departments.

As officers entered the house, the elderly homeowner fired a shot through her bedroom door, hitting Officer Hurst.

He died shortly after being wounded.

Officer Hurst was 22-years-old and had only been with the department for 18 months at the time of his death.
