Haiti quickly descending into violence, madness

In the days since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti, people already experiencing food shortages, and lack of proper medical care have now become so desperate that they are battling one another in the streets with machetes.

Along with aid yet to reach the people living in the poorest nation of the Western Hemisphere, bodies piling up in the streets, and folks still trapped under the rubble of fallen structures, gangs of machete-wielding young men can now be seen roaming the streets of Port-au-Prince.

On Wednesday, CBS reported that the gangs were spotted going into stores and stealing “all the supplies they could carry.” The armed looters could be seen walking up and down streets with machetes raised above their heads. The gangs are now challenging one another for whatever is left of the meager supplies.

Machete fights have reportedly become more common in the capital city, as frustration and despair set in.

The real concern is the lack of a police presence in the city. With no law enforcement present, the poor people of Haiti will be left to fend for themselves against gangs of armed thugs.

On Thursday, a Russian search and rescue team had to suspend their operations because of the aggressive looting.

On Friday morning, U.N. World Food Program spokeswoman Emilia Casella told the Associated Press that about 60 percent of the food stocks in their Port-au-Prince warehouse had been looted.
