UFL 2011 Season Kickoff Countdown: 5 Days

September 10, 2011 – United Football League (UFL) JACKSONVILLE, FL – Saturday, September 10, 2011 – five days from today the United Football League kicks off its third season when the Omaha Nighthawks welcome the Virginia Destroyers to TD Ameritrade Park at 7pm CT / 8pm ET on Thursday, September 15. two days later in Sacramento, the Mountain Lions host the defending champion Las Vegas Locomotives at Hornet Stadium at 10.30pm PT / 7.30pm ET.

From ticket deals to benefit nonprofit groups and preseason parties to radio shows and throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game, the teams of the United Football League have been busy away from the long days of training camp through a variety of off-field activities.

Non-profit fundraising:

The two-time defending champion Las Vegas Locomotives continue to reach out to the Las Vegas community by offering local nonprofit groups a fundraising opportunity with home game tickets during the 2011 season.

All nonprofit organizations can now buy $20, $15 or $10 home game tickets at half price, plus a $1 facility fee, and the groups can then resell the tickets at face value to raise proceeds for their organizations. to purchase tickets, nonprofit members can call 702.877.LOCO.

Busting open the Zone:

Dave and Buster’s will be the place to be on Tuesday nights during the Omaha Nighthawks season. the entertainment restaurant and the team signed a deal establishing Dave and Buster’s as the host of the weekly Nighthawks Radio Hour.

Hosting the show will be local radio personality and Nighthawks fan Mike’l Severe from 1620AM the Zone. “Dave and Busters is the perfect place for fans to be a part of the show, grab a great meal and have some fun,” said Mike’l.

The Zone will broadcast the weekly show live from Dave and Buster’s and will feature players and members of the football staff every Tuesday night starting with a pre-season special on September 13 at 7pm.

Preseason party in Sacramento:

The Sacramento Mountain Lions hosted a Season Kickoff Party at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium. Head coach Dennis Green and his Mountain Lions practiced and then addressed the fans. the players signed autographs following the practice.

“This was a great opportunity for our fans to get their first look at the team on their home field,” Mountain Lions senior vice president Joe Wagoner said. “Additionally, fans are friends. And it’s a great chance for them to get reacquainted with each other as our season gets closer.”

The Lady Lions mingled with fans, posed for photos and put on a performance. Mojo, the Mountain Lions mascot, was on hand for photographs and autographs as well. Season-ticket holders were able to check out their seat locations. the entire Mountain Lions front office staff were on on hand and fans were able to purchase season tickets, individual tickets and team merchandise.

Radio sensation:

The Virginia Destroyers and ESPN Radio 94.1 are teaming up to bring fans exciting United Football League action. ESPN Radio 94.1 already carries the Norfolk Tides and Norfolk Admiral games and is adding the Destroyers to its stable of sports offerings to Hampton Roads fans. the Max Media station will carry both home and away games for the 2011 season. When ESPN Radio 94.1 is unable to air a Destroyers game due to a prior commitment, sister station 1310 AM will broadcast the action.

Former NFL player and Norfolk Virginia native William Fuller, who played professional football for 13 seasons as a defensive lineman for the Houston Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles and the San Diego Chargers, will provide game analysis. Fuller grew up in Chesapeake and played football at Indian River High School before going on to the University of North Carolina.

Longtime ESPN Radio 94.1 sports anchor Tony Mecurio will co-host the Marty Schottenheimer Show every Tuesday throughout the season at 4.25pm. Coach Schottenheimer’s debut show will recap training camp and focus on the Destroyers’ first game against the Omaha Nighthawks on September 15 in Nebraska.

Pitch perfect:

Head coach of the Las Vegas Locomotives, Jim Fassel, teamed up with the Las Vegas 51s baseball team and threw out the ceremonial first pitch as they faced off against the Salt Lake City Bees. Coach Fassel was joined at the game by Locos coaching staff and some players.

Get your gear:

Omaha Nighthawks fans have turned to Lawlor’s Custom Sportswear for all their game day gear needs from the moment the team was announced and now have one more reason to stop by the sportswear store. Tickets in the $15 to $45 range will be available for the Nighthawks home opener on September 15 at the 84th and J street location.

Virginia in safe hands:

Virginia Destroyers have announced William Mayer as the new owner of the team. Mayer has been a UFL investor and owner since the league’s inception, owning the new York Sentinels that played during the inaugural 2009 UFL season. In 2010, the Sentinels moved to Connecticut, becoming the Hartford Colonials with Mayer at the helm.

“I know the Destroyers have gone through a period of uncertainty,” said Mayer. “What has impressed me the most is the unwavering support of fans and the Hampton Roads community during those tough times. I wanted to become a part of that spirit and commitment.”
