Police believe missing North Carolina girl was murdered, stepmother admits to writing ransom note

At a Tuesday morning press conference, Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins announced that the Amber Alert issued over the weekend for 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker has been dropped, and the case has shifted to a homicide investigation.

Chief Adkins said that Elisa Baker, the girl's stepmother has confessed to writing a ransom note found at the girl’s home, she has been charged with felony obstruction of justice in the case.

While the girl’s parents claimed to have seen her sleeping in her bed hours before she disappeared, police cannot find anyone who has seen Zahra in over a month.

Adkins told reporters: “We understand the public wants to help find Zahra. The problem is we cannot confirm with any confidence how long Zahra has been missing. Without this information, we cannot positively select the area to search for her.”

The girl’s father, Adam Baker, is cooperating with police and has reportedly said he believes it is possible that his wife is responsible.

Family members are now alleging that Elisa Baker frequently abused her stepdaughter, who lost her leg to bone cancer and used hearing aids.

Virginia high school student gunned down in Honduras

Less than two weeks ago, Jimmy Gerardo Portillo Oliva, 18, who attended Heritage High School in Leesburg was shot to death in Honduras. He had returned to his native country to fulfill his visa requirements.

Oliva, along with several friends were returning from home when he was shot by four masked men. None of the gunmen have been caught.

Four others, including Oliva’s cousin, William Alexander Oliva Cortez, 16, were also killed.

Oliva’s mother and stepfather, traveled from Leesburg to Honduras for their son’s funeral.

“This is just an awful, very sad incident,” said Heritage principal Margaret Huckaby.

Heritage High School principal Margaret Huckaby told the Loudoun-Times Mirror: “Jimmy was a great kid. He was a good student and he played on our JV soccer team last year. He was an all-around great young man.”

Huckaby was in the United States as a legal resident, and returned to Honduras after turning 18, to obtain his own visa. He had been in the Central American nation for two months when he was murdered.

Huckaby said: “He was following the rules. He was doing things the way they are supposed to be done.”

The Honduran newspaper La Prensa, reported that local police believe the gunmen were targeting the survivor of another massacre four months earlier. It was apparently a case of mistaken identity.

Choloma, where Oliva was killed, has become overrun with violence from organized crime.

Honduras is home to the notoriously violent street gang, known as MS-13. The gang engages in kidnapping, drug distribution, and murder-for-hire.

On October 12, 2000, while the USS Cole was anchored off the port of Aden, Yemen, when a small boat filled with explosives pulled alongside the ship and the terrorists aboard, detonated their charges. The explosion ripped open a 40-by-40-foot hole in the ship's port side, killing 17 sailors and injuring another 39.

10 years later, the Obama administration has now set aside the prosecution of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged mastermind behind the suicide attack on the USS Cole.

In late August, the Justice Department filed a motion in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, stating that "no charges are either pending or contemplated with respect to al-Nashiri in the near future."

The statement was quietly hidden in a motion to dismiss a petition by Nashiri's attorneys, and of course, all but completely ignored by the mainstream press.

The move by the Obama administration to at least temporarily delay trial is a puzzling one since military prosecutors have been prepared to try Nashiri for months, and had planned to do so this past summer.

On June 30, 2008, Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Hartmann announced charges against Nashiri for “organizing and directing” the bombing plot, and that the Defense Department would seek the death penalty against the Saudi national.

Nashiri has been held at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay since 2006.

HIV-infected prostitute sentenced to prison

On Monday, in a Virginia Beach courtroom, Patricia Ann Curry, 45, was sentenced to one year in prison for prostitution and failing to disclose her HIV status to an undercover police officer.

Curry was arrested in July 2009 after offering sex to two undercover detectives for $20 each.

She was diagnosed with HIV in 2007.

According to court documents, Curry told police officers that she was addicted to crack and needed money for drugs, and also admitted that she has unprotected sex with approximately 50 people every month.

Judge Frederick B. Lowe told Curry: “The court, in its concern, can't do much of anything but keep you off the street for now.”

Virginia Beach police have only arrested one other individual for intentionally trying to spread HIV, a felony, in the last five years.

North Carolina Pizza Hut worker shoots, kills two armed robbers

On Monday night, two armed robbers burst into a Charlotte Pizza Hut, while workers were in the back cleaning. According to police, as one of the employees was being beaten and herded into a cooler with his co-workers, he pulled his own gun and shot the men.

The dead assailants have been identified as Gregory James Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace, both 21 and both were convicted felons.

The unidentified Pizza Hut employee told the Charlotte Observer that he began carrying a gun after he was robbed twice in two years.

He said: “If the bad guys attack, you know they'll have guns. The police can't protect everyone.”

In July 2008, the owner of a Virginia Beach pizzeria shot and killed an armed robber, who was threatening to kill one of his employees.

It was a Saturday night when a masked Johnny Morocco Williams, 41, slipped in the backdoor of Dominick’s Pizza and Pasta, demanding that the owner, Ferdinando Abbodante, open the safe.

However, what Williams did not know was that the safe was where Abbodante kept his own handgun.

The robber became increasingly violent, putting his gun to the head of a female employee, refusing to simply take the money from the cash register and leave.

Abbodante told the Virginian-Pilot: “I told him to walk to the register, get the money, leave my store, and no one would get hurt.”

But Williams kept yelling: “Open the safe!”

So Abbodante did what Williams said…he opened the safe and grabbed his gun. Williams fired once and missedâ€"Abbodante fired several times, killing the armed robber.

Here are a few facts about armed Americans:

-Armed citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as the police do every year in this country (1,527 to 606).

-A 1996 University of Chicago study concluded that states which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rates by 8.5 percent, rapes by 5 percent, aggravated assaults by 7 percent, and robbery by 3 percent.

-According to the National Safety Council, with guns being used 2.5 million times a year in self defense against criminals, firearms are actually used more than 80 times more often to protect lives, rather than to take lives.

Suffolk police looking for man who allegedly set dog on fire

Suffolk police officers responded to an injured animal call in the 400 block of Webb St. this morning, to find a dog who had been set on fire. The pit bull’s owner said that his own brother poured gasoline on the dog and set him ablaze, after an argument.

The dog suffered burns to his face, neck and chest, but is expected to recover.

Tonight, police are searching for Lashawn M. Harper, 28, who will be charged with animal cruelty and malicious wounding of an animal.

Police still unsure if Craigslist ad about baby in dumpster was real or not

On Friday night, police in Colorado Springs, Colorado began a desperate search for an abandoned baby, after an ad appeared on Craigslist proclaiming: “DESPERATE BABY WILL DIE IF SOMEONE DOESN'T COME PICK IT UP.”

The person posting the ad claimed to be a teenager who had just given birth, and that her boyfriend would toss the newborn into a dumpster at 232 University Drive. The ad also included a photo of a newborn baby, covered in blood.

The ad continued, “I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! please help my baby.”

No baby was found.

Police traced the IP address from which the posting originated to a home in Colorado Springs. However, detectives believe that the family inside the home had nothing to do with the posting and that their wireless connection which is unsecured was used by someone else.

Colorado Springs Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Noblitt said that his department will continue to look for the baby until they find the person responsible for placing the ad.

Sgt. Noblitt told reporters: “Until we find the people that actually placed the ad we’re going to investigate it as a serious situation. We have no option.”

Colorado has a Safe Haven law which allows mothers to drop off a baby at any hospital or fire station within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked.

Police in Hampton, Virginia recently arrested Kimberly Vick Fisher, 30, and charged her with one count of attempted murder, after she allegedly left her newborn infant in the woods.

The baby was found by some contractors working on Rendon Drive. They heard crying coming from a heavily wooded area, and when they investigated, they discovered an infant girl wrapped in a trash bag with the umbilical cord still attached.

The baby was transported to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, where she quickly recovered from exposure, and is now in protective custody.

On Monday, Fisher was denied bond and is being held in the Hampton City Jail. Her next court appearance is set for November 12.

Virginia law also allows for mothers to drop their unwanted babies off at any hospital or fire station throughout the state, with no questions asked. The law was enacted to prevent crimes such as this one, which could have easily ended in tragedy.

Richmond youth basketball coach arrested for sexually assaulting minor

Antwain Fletcher, 31, was arrested last week in Burlington, North Carolina and charged with false imprisonment and sexual battery on a 17-year-old boy. The arrest occurred at the Econolodge motel where the minor was allegedly being held against his will.

Fletcher who has been a volunteer coach with Squires Richmond Basketball, an AAU basketball program for the last nine years, is being held on $40,000 bond in the Alamance County Jail.

Fletcher works with boys ages 12 to 17, and was in North Carolina attending a basketball camp.

Virginia law allows for mothers to drop their unwanted babies off at any hospital or fire station throughout the state, with no questions asked. The law was enacted to prevent crimes such as this one, which could have easily ended in tragedy.

First woman executed in Virginia in nearly 100 years

A little after 9:00 p.m., Teresa Lewis was put to death by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. Earlier in the week, her requests for clemency were denied by both Gov. Bob McDonnell and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Her last meal consisted of fried chicken, peas, German chocolate cake and a Dr. Pepper.

In 2003, Lewis pleaded guilty to masterminding the October 2002 murders of her husband and stepson in Pittsylvania County.

At her sentencing, Circuit Court Judge Charles Strauss addressed Lewis, telling her that she was a cold, emotionless killer, and was motivated solely by financial reasons. She was actually given two death sentences, plus 53 years.

Prosecutors said that Lewis boasted to friends that she had married Julian Lewis Jr., simply for money and offered sex to the two men who carried out the murders. She was to be the sole beneficiary of a $250,000 life insurance policy.

Lewis, not only offered herself to the hired hit men, but her 16-year-old daughter as well. She left a door unlocked, and sat by as her husband and step-son were gunned down, waiting an hour to call 911.

Both men were shot repeatedly with shotguns.

In a scene which can only be described as sickening, Lewis actually went through her husband’s pockets, as he lay dying, gasping for air. A deputy sheriff testified that when he arrived on the scene, Julian Lewis was still alive, and told him: “My wife knows who done this to me.”

The gunmen, Rodney Fuller and Matthew Shallenberger, were both sentenced to life in prison. Shallenberger committed suicide in 2006 at Wallens Ridge State Prison.

Lewis' daughter, Christie Lynn Bean, who knew about the plot but kept quiet, also served time in prison.

Lewis’ attorney, James Rocap, claimed that his client was not capable of plotting the murders due to her severe dependency on prescription drugs, as well as a personality disorder which rendered her overly dependent on men.

He also said that Lewis developed a “deep faith and deep remorse for the crimes.”

Though her defenders claimed that Lewis should not have been executed due to her low IQ (around 72), she fully understood her actions, as was evident in a recent interview with Richmond’s WTVR.

During the interview, Lewis expressed sorrow for her heinous crimes, saying: “Knowing that I was part of it, of taking her family away and my participation in it, I don't think there's enough words to even begin to tell her how sorry I am. Even good people and Christian people, all people, can make a wrong decision and end up being where I'm at.”

Since reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976, Virginia has carried-out 108 executions.

Prosecutors said that Lewis boasted to friends that she had married Julian Lewis Jr., simply for money and offered sex to the two men who carried out the murders. She was to be the sole beneficiary of a $250,000 life insurance policy.

Lewis, not only offered herself to the hired hit men, but her 16-year-old daughter as well. She left a door unlocked, and sat by as her husband and step-son were gunned down, waiting an hour to call 911.

Both men were shot repeatedly with shotguns.

In a scene which can only be described as sickening, Lewis actually went through her husband’s pockets, as he lay dying, gasping for air. A deputy sheriff testified that when he arrived on the scene, Julian Lewis was still alive, and told him: “My wife knows who done this to me.”

The gunmen, Rodney Fuller and Matthew Shallenberger, were both sentenced to life in prison. Shallenberger committed suicide in 2006 at Wallens Ridge State Prison.

Lewis' daughter, Christie Lynn Bean, who knew about the plot but kept quiet, also served time in prison.

Lewis’ attorney, James Rocap, claimed that his client was not capable of plotting the murders due to her severe dependency on prescription drugs, as well as a personality disorder which rendered her overly dependent on men.

He also said that Lewis developed a “deep faith and deep remorse for the crimes.”

Though her defenders claimed that Lewis should not have been executed due to her low IQ (around 72), she fully understood her actions, as was evident in a recent interview with Richmond’s WTVR.

During the interview, Lewis expressed sorrow for her heinous crimes, saying: “Knowing that I was part of it, of taking her family away and my participation in it, I don't think there's enough words to even begin to tell her how sorry I am. Even good people and Christian people, all people, can make a wrong decision and end up being where I'm at.”

Since reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976, Virginia has carried-out 108 executions.

Police arrest Hampton woman for abandoning her baby in the woods

Hampton police have arrested Kimberly Vick Fisher, 30, and charged her with one count of attempted murder, after she allegedly left her newborn infant in the woods on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, the baby was found by some contractors working on Rendon Drive. They heard crying coming from a heavily wooded area, and when they investigated, they discovered an infant girl wrapped in a trash bag with the umbilical cord still attached.

The baby was transported to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, and is doing well according to police.

Fisher is currently being held in the Hampton City Jail.

Virginia law allows for mothers to drop their unwanted babies off at any hospital or fire station throughout the state, with no questions asked. The law was enacted to prevent crimes such as this one, which could have easily ended in tragedy.

Local jailer convicted of sex with inmate, fined $25

On Tuesday, Letica Dina Stagg, 41, a former Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail correctional officer was convicted of one count of having sex with an inmate, which is a felony. However, at the suggestion of Williamsburg- James City County Commonwealth's Attorney Nate Green, the same jury imposed only a $25 fine.

The former guard could have received a prison sentence of up to five years.

Stagg, who began working as a guard at the jail in 2004, resigned in September 2009 after it was alleged that she had sex with inmate, Tarik Watson, 33.

Stagg initially admitted to the relationship, but then claimed that she had been forced into the confession.

During the trial, a prison official testified that Watson made over 230 phone calls to Stagg within a two-month period in which the two discussed their sexual relationship in graphic detail.

While Stagg maintained her innocence during Tuesday’s proceedings, she admitted that she and Watson had a previous relationship while the two attended Thomas Nelson Community College.

Illegal aliens charged with oceanfront abduction, rape

On Wednesday, Chesapeake Police arrested Carlos Hernandez, 24, and Santiago Hernandez, 22, both were wanted for a kidnapping and rape that began at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

The two illegal aliens allegedly abducted a woman at knife point as she walked to her car in the 2100 block of Pacific Avenue.

According to police, the suspects forced the woman into their SUV and took her to another to location, where she was sexually assaulted. They then drove to a convenience store, where the victim escaped and called police.

Hernandez and Jimenez are both charged with conspiracy to commit abduction, conspiracy to commit rape, abduction with intent to defile and rape. One of the suspects also faces burglary charges in Chesapeake.

The illegal aliens are being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer has been issued.

Around 1:30 this afternoon, a Virginia State Trooper was hit by a tractor trailer on the shoulder of I-664 Southbound at the Portsmouth Boulevard exit.

The Associated Press recently ran a story about Jeffrey Allen Weathers, who moved from Alaska to Puerto Rico in order to avoid registering as a sex offender, as the U.S. territory has very weak laws regarding those who commit crimes against children.

Weathers, who was convicted of a sexual assault on a minor and possession of child pornography, was arrested by federal authorities and brought back to the mainland.

Deputy U.S. Marshall Rafael Escobar reported that five unregistered sex offenders hiding-out in Puerto Rico have been arrested in the last year, and his agency is currently searching for 10 more on the island.

Escobar said: “I'm sure there's a bunch more. The Internet is there, and these guys are checking to see where the law is weakest.”

Unlike the U.S. mainland, failing to register as a sex offender in Puerto Rico is only a misdemeanor, not a felony. There are also no laws on the island that prevent convicted child molesters from living near schools or parks.

According to Puerto Rico police Capt. Margarita George, around six convicted sex offenders come to the island every month and register with the police.

But what the AP failed to report is what may be the main draw for U.S. child molesters to move to the Carribean paradise…the age of sexual consent in Puerto Rico is only 14-years of age!

The following is a list of countries that have an age of sexual consent of 14 or lower (where indicated):

On September 3, Loudoun Sheriff’s deputies arrested John Swann Evans, 34, for an alleged attack on a 37-year-old woman. According to authorities, the two met on the dating website eHarmony.

Evans of South Riding, has been charged with abduction with intent to defile and forcible sodomy. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

The assault allegedly took place in July, at Evans’ home.

Investigators have reason to believe that others have fallen victim to Evans, and are asking anyone who is either a victim or has knowledge of more assaults, to contact Investigator Bobbie Ochsman of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475.

Governor will not intervene in Thursday's execution

Gov. Bob McDonnell has denied a request for clemency for Virginia’s lone female death row inmate, Teresa Lewis, 41, and barring a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court, Lewis will become the first woman executed in the state since 1912.

In 2003, Lewis pleaded guilty to masterminding the October 2002 murders of her husband and stepson in Pittsylvania County.

At her sentencing, Circuit Court Judge Charles Strauss addressed Lewis, telling her that she was a cold, emotionless killer, and was motivated solely by financial reasons. She was actually given two death sentences, plus 53 years.

With the age of sexual consent at 14...Puerto Rico has become a pedophile paradise

The Associated Press recently ran a story about Jeffrey Allen Weathers, who moved from Alaska to Puerto Rico in order to avoid registering as a sex offender, as the U.S. territory has very weak laws regarding those who commit crimes against children.

Weathers, who was convicted of a sexual assault on a minor and possession of child pornography, was arrested by federal authorities and brought back to the mainland.

Deputy U.S. Marshall Rafael Escobar reported that five unregistered sex offenders hiding-out in Puerto Rico have been arrested in the last year, and his agency is currently searching for 10 more on the island.

Escobar said: “I'm sure there's a bunch more. The Internet is there, and these guys are checking to see where the law is weakest.”

Unlike the U.S. mainland, failing to register as a sex offender in Puerto Rico is only a misdemeanor, not a felony. There are also no laws on the island that prevent convicted child molesters from living near schools or parks.

According to Puerto Rico police Capt. Margarita George, around six convicted sex offenders come to the island every month and register with the police.

But what the AP failed to report is what may be the main draw for U.S. child molesters to move to the Carribean paradise…the age of sexual consent in Puerto Rico is only 14-years of age!

York County residents beware...motorist attacked Thursday night

Around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, a woman pulled over on Surrender Road, near Cook Road in York County, after experiencing car trouble. While she was outside of her car, two men approached her in another car and asked if she needed their help. However, they quickly attacked and robbed her.

The victim was hit in the head, and her assailants kicked her as she lay on the ground. When she got back to her feet, the men were driving away.

Her purse was stolen in the assault.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, the woman could not provide a description of her attackers.

Elderly Arizona man beaten to death by teens in Virginia

A week ago, George Leroy Baker, 81, of Tempe, AZ was in Lynchburg for his grand daughter’s wedding when was attacked by a group of teenagers, while out on an evening walk in the downtown area. Police found the man unconscious on the sidewalk.

Baker died the next day in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Kenneth Davis and Vernon Jackson, both 16, and an unnamed 13-year-old were arrested Tuesday, and charged with murder.

Court documents indicate that Davis was trying to impress a group of girls, telling them that he would hit the next person he saw.

Witnesses report seeing him run up to the octogenarian “in an aggressive manner” and punch him. The blow was so severe, it was actually audible to many of those present.

He continued to kick Baker as he lay on the ground.

The affidavit states: “A witness dining at the Hash House saw a young black male kick the victim in the face after he had already been knocked to the ground. The victim was unconscious upon bystanders coming to his aid.”

Lynchburg Police Capt. Todd Swisher told the News and Advance: “This seems to be an unprovoked, random violent act. What a tragic event.”

The murder threatens to stoke racial tensions in Lynchburg, as many believe the attack was at least in partâ€"racially motivated.

On Friday, local black leaders gathered near the site of the beating to express their sorrow for what happened, but claimed the deadly assault had nothing to do with race.

Providence Place pastor James Coleman said: “It could have been any one of us that happened along that night. And had the victim been an elderly African-American and the perpetrators three white youths, we would still be standing here today.”

Former sailor who planned to rape child sentenced to prison

On Tuesday, Alan Paul Strieper, 25, was sentenced in Norfolk Federal Court to 35 years in prison, to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release.

On June 11, Strieper, pleaded guilty to attempted enticement and child pornography charges in Norfolk Federal Court.

The former Norfolk-based sailor, was arrested in February after an undercover investigation by federal agents.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Strieper became involved in a rather sickening online chat with another man in the fall of 2009. The two talked about kidnapping an raping a child. The other man turned out to be a federal informant.

According to court documents, in a phone conversation, on Dec. 1, 2009, Strieper asked the informant: “Have you ever thought of just grabbing a nice cutie that is walking home from school or something?”

In another phone call, the following day, Strieper told his potential accomplice: “If you're flexible, you could fly here and then we can drive to a town like 45 minutes away or something like that.”

The two spoke about committing the crime for two months. The phone conversations and online chats were recorded by investigators.

Eventually, Strieper asked the man to travel from his home in St. Louis to carry out the kidnapping and rape, possibly on a child as young as two years of age. When Strieper arrived at Norfolk International Airport, he was arrested.

Federal agents found duct tape, rubber gloves, bleach, several bottles of pills, and an Elmo doll in Strieper’s vehicle.

At the time of his arrest, Strieper’s Facebook page contained several pictures of small children, listed as “friends.” The page has since been removed.

Strieper served aboard the USS San Antonio. He is originally from Richland, Washington.

On Wednesday, Kenya Chester-Jackson, 22, was arrested and charged with felony Child Abuse after an August 10th incident in which she allegedly beat her 2-year-old stepson in the groin with a belt buckle.

The beating was severe enough for Chester-Jackson and her husband to seek treatment for the little boy at Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters, where nurses notified the police.

On Friday, police in Charlottesville arrested a 14-year-old boy for the shooting of a 13-year-old girl in the city’s Forest Hills Park. The shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The teenager is charged with attempted malicious wounding, malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school.

According to Charlottesville Police Lt. Gary Pleasants, the shooting happened during a confrontation involving several individuals. The boy was apparently aiming at another teenager, but instead, hit the girl in the leg.

The victim was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Because of his age, police are not releasing the name of the alleged shooter.

Fort Apache: Wards Corner...the area that Norfolk's City Council has forgotten

The area which was once known as the “Times Square of the South,” has become a dangerous section of town, filled with abandoned businesses and rundown apartment complexes. Though Norfolk’s City Council has been promising for years, to clean up the Wards Corner/Southern Shopping Center area, residents are still waiting and living in fear.

The following commentary which voices the frustration felt by law abiding citizens, appeared on the community website known as Wards Corner Now on September 19, 2009:

“The East Little Creek Road Corridor between Wards Corner and Wal-Mart is becoming a gun range with humans as targets. Two murders this week in the 800 block of Banaker Road. One murder last week in the 300 block of Fort Worth Avenue and today, Saturday, another shooting in the 800 block of East Little Creek Road.

Why isn’t Norfolk going to war on this dysfunction that is becoming a part of every day life in our area? Is it because most of the killings and shootings involve black folks? If this criminal activity were taking place in Downtown, you want to bet that the Mayor and several City Council folks would have their mugs all over the television news. Case in point â€" The Granby Theater shooting in March of 2007. All hell broke loose in the city’s officialdom.

Why is violence in one part of the city dealt with severely and in other areas almost ignored? One answer is institutional racism. Black folks killing each other in Norfolk is ok as long as it doesn’t effect the economic development efforts in Downtown.”

Wards Corner Now is a group of concerned citizens, churches and businesses in the Greater Wards Corner area.

D.C. tourist visited museum while his dog was dying inside hot van (in storage bin)

On Monday, Kenneth Reiff of Michigan was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after his eight year old Chihuahua, Rosie died inside a plastic storage bin inside his hot van. Another dog, Pebbles, a 15-year-old Beagle was also left in the vehicle for several hours, while Reiff and his daughter toured the Holocaust Museum.

The temperature in D.C. hit 96 degrees on Monday. The temperature inside the van could have easily reached 125 degrees or higher.

Pebbles is being treated for heat distress and is reportedly recovering.

Reiff has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty.

Unfortunately, this scene has been played out all too often this summer in the District, with tourists responsible for the majority of the deaths.

Scott Giacoppo of the Washington Humane Society said: “It has been a very hot summer and we have had too many dogs die because their owners are irresponsible. Pet owners need to know it is a crime to leave your dog inside a hot car.”

While D.C. Metropolitan Police placed Mr. Reiff under arrest, his daughter was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

Illegal aliens arrested for selling drugs, alcohol and fake i.d.s

On Friday, Trinidad Gomez-Diaz, 42, and Jorge Sanchez-Guzman, 40, were arrested at their home in the Cavalier Mobile Home Park on South Military Highway on multiple charges, including the illegal sale of alcohol. Both are in the country illegally.

The arrests came as a result of a multi-agency investigation by the Chesapeake Police Department, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement Agents.

The illegal aliens had apparently turned their mobile home into a one-stop shop for everything from drugs to fake green cards.

A search warrant found 25 cases of beer, cigarettes, over $600 cash, marijuana and fraudulent identification cards.

Gomez-Diaz and Sanchez-Guzman have been charged with possession of cigarettes with intent to distribute or sell, possession of false identity, selling alcohol without a license and maintaining a common nuisance.

Sanchez-Guzman is also charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

Both suspects are currently being held in the Chesapeake Correctional Center on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.

Norfolk school employee charged with stealing from PTA

On Friday, Joan Nicole Lee, 39, who works as the In School Suspension Supervisor at Sewell’s Point Elementary School was charged with embezzling thousands of dollars from the school’s PTA funds.

According to police spokesperson Karen Parker-Chesson, the Department's Economic Crimes Unit is investigating the case.

Lee was due in court on Wednesday for her arraignment.

How many drinks does it take to be over the legal limit?

Portsmouth police ask for public's help finding sexual assault suspects

Portsmouth police just released photos of Roy O'Neal Norfleet Jr., 25, and Joshua Eugene White, 24, both of Chesapeake, as they are wanted for a recent sexual assault.

Both suspects face charges of abduction with intent to defile, forcible sodomy and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and are considered armed and dangerous.

The brutal attack occurred early Sunday morning, after they allegedly abducted a woman from a location on Parker Avenue, forcing the victim into a car and sexually assaulting her at gunpoint.

Virginia Beach teacher arrested in child sex sting

Randall Pilon, 54, a teacher at Salem Middle School on Lynnhaven Parkway was arrested on Friday and charged with attempted indecent liberties and use of a communications device to facilitate offenses against children. He was taken into custody at the school.

According to Virginia Beach Police, Pilon was talking over the internet to someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. The girl turned out to be a detective in Kentucky who reported the teacher to VBPD.

Pilon is a special education teacher.
